We compete in five non-theatre speech events: Original Oratory, Declamation, Informational, Extemporaneous, and Impromptu. (Check out the separate page above for impromptu.)
Explore the dropdowns below to learn about each event.
Original Oratory is an event in which one writes and performs a self written, 8-10 minute speech on a problem that they are passionate about and their ideal solution.
The example above is Halima Badri from Apple Valley High School in Minnesota performing "Our Quest for the Golden Apple"
Declamation is an event in which one takes a speech written by another person (TedTalk, motivational speaker, etc.) and performs it as their own. (9th and 10th graders only!!)
A great choice for beginners!
The example above is Destin Patton-Warner (Sr.) of Harvey (Thornton), performing "A Letter to a Young Enlistee"
Informative is an event in which one writes and performs a self written, 8-10 minute speech on a topic that they are passionate about and teach it to their audience.
The example above is Jordyn Allen performing, "The Birds and the Weaves."
Extemporaneous is an event in which one has a 30 minute prep period to create a 7 minute speech about a political topic, which differs each round.
The example above is Christopher Maximos answering, "How will the Green New Deal influence future environmental legislation?"
