What is Public Forum Debate?
Public Forum Debate is a 2 on 2 style of debate, where teams across the state (and country) get to test out their argumentative and speaking skills on various contemporary topics! Although official sounding, Public Forum (PF) is an amazing way to refine your speaking skills, argument forming, and general knowledge, whilst having a lot of fun. Debates often take unexpected turns, so be prepared to be creative in order to pitch your idea as the best. Whether your in it for the skills, knowledge, or just the trophies, Public Forum offers incredible skills (and fun) for everyone interested!
From the National Speech and Debate Association:
Public Forum Debate is a partner debate focused on public policies around the world. Collaboration is key! Balanced teams, both in terms of preparation before debates and contributions within a debate, helps provide a competitive advantage during tournaments. PF looks at current event topics. Students who do Public Forum must be prepared to debate in front of judges without any formal debate training. Being able to persuade a range of judges is a central component to this event. Additionally, PF is focused upon debating varying resolutions that change frequently, which exposes students to a variety of topics during a singular competitive season.
