This is an unsung hero project titled, "New Beginnings" which illustrates American philanthropist Caroline Ferriday who is most notable for her presence in the French Resistance of 1944 as well as her efforts towards helping women survivors of WW2 concentration camps. She is seen here guiding the women towards a more peaceful and liberated future, with a candle of hope. This piece is created from watercolors, colored pencils, and layered paper.
I quite like the addition of the rabbits in the painting as they possess an endearing quality but also symbolize the souls of the women who could not walk with the others. In some ways it also captures a look into rebirth and perseverance, as evident from the scars of the rabbits.
Getting the women to stand out more against the background was a somewhat difficult task. Even after another layer of paint they still stood slightly washed out against Ferriday herself, which is rather unfortunate as these women play just as a significant role in this painting. They could have benefited from more dark outlines and shadows to really push the depth.
