For this unit, we were instructed to write five different poems. Each poem could be about what ever we wanted and in any format. There were a couple of requirements that we had to follow like length of poem and use of figurative language. Every poem had to be a minimum of 12 lines and covered different figurative languages and sound devices. We had the freedom to use our creative minds and poetry knowledge to write our own poetry.
In my opinion poems took me little time to write. I was able to come up with well written poems in a short period of time. This allowed me to be a conscientious learner. I was able to allow enough time write my poems and finish other class work in every period. I would designate 10 to 15 minutes of strictly just poetry time. The remainder of the period was used to finish other English 9 work.
Once we wrote our poems we had to choose one and present it to the class. Everyone in the class presented a poem and the judges picked one person to move onto the next round. Personally I did not like the poetry slam. I am not a fan of presenting in front of large groups. Some areas I need to improve on are eye contact and speaking slowly. I do not make good eye contact and speak to fast because I am nervous when presenting. Some areas that I am strong in are writing the poem and using figurative language. I can always write a well written poem while incorporating figurative language. In conclusion, poetry is a large part of the English 9 curriculum.
