Water contaminates the backround:
Chlorine: is added to the water to kill the bacteria and other chemicals
Iron: Enters the water naturally and from industrial sources and having high levels in your water can stain it and affect taste
Copper: needed in small amount but too much can hurt your liver and lungs
Ph: Tells you how accidic or non accidic the water is most fish and aqutic life between 6.5 and 8.2
The first thing we did was grab the plastic water bottle and cut it in half. We then flipped in upside down so that the neck of the bottle was facing down. Which was going to act as our funnel. We then reaserched then best things to put into a water filter to actually filter it. We found cotton balls at the neck of the bottle would be most effictive. Next we added two coffe fulters to create a small barrier between the cotton and the next material which was find sand, this woud act a catcher and a purifier to out water filter. We repated the same step with the coffe filters then added a layer of activated charcol which would both improve the taste of our water as well as puifiy it and catch any chemicals. On top of that we added a layer coaraser sand and then a layer of small peebles to small rocks which would be the first layer of filtration. Once it was completed we tested by adding creek water into the filter and seeing how it would come out. The result was impressive. Activated charcol removes most all of the pollutants and chemicals through a process called absorbtion. Basically the chemcials and other things stick to the surface of the cahrcol. Since the activated charcol is super pourous. So it covers a large aera. Its surface also has chemical groups like hydroxyl, carbonyl, and carboxyl, which can attract specific kinds of pollutants and trap them.
Overall most everything went right the two main things that did were that our filter actually worked. The layers did their job and the water came out a lot cleaner. Second the materials we used were simple cheap but high quality and effective. I think our main strongest materials were the activated charcol and the cotton balls they were super effective everything stayed in place and the filter ran fast. We could have improved on a few things though. Some days our group was not very focused and we didnt get much work done which caused us to kind of cram our work. I think that we could have also improved upon the way that our filter looked I think that we could have make it cleaner looking and more sleek which would haev been more appeling to the judges, we could have added diffrent materials to help improve our water quality. I think overall our group made a great product worked well togther, had fun and most improtantly learned. I will take what I need to improve on and apply it to the next project
