Content:

  • Human use patterns: some patterns are formed when people create their own paths walking towards something on the campus. These are then used by more and more people and become one of the most used paths.
  • Use of sunlight and water: we used sunlight and water in our design plan, but also found ways to block the sun and water. We need the natural sunlight and water to keep our trees and plants growing, but when it is hot or raining out, we found a way to keep the sun and rain out. Our plan is to build a gazebo so that people are able to hide/stay under it to shade themselves or protect themselves from getting wet.
  • Material choice: we used cedar wood because it is great for outdoors, asphalt shingles for the aesthetic look, fabric hammocks because they are cheap, and cypress and Japanese maple trees because they are both great trees that survive well in our region and look nice at the same time.

Reflection:

This was another very fun project we did. My group this time was Mark and Josh. This project was different than the rest because there wasn't much physics to it, it was more engineering and designing. We got to design and plan the outdoor campus of the new stem building that is being built right now up by the Maker Space. This was a cool experience because I have never gotten to do something like this on a real scale. However this project seemed very short, so for that reason it was not one of my favorites since we didn't get to work on it for too long. I feel like our group got along very well and we worked pretty good together, so that caused me to excel in some of the 6 C's categories. One C would be communication. We talked a lot with one another and made sure to communicate our thoughts and ideas to the group. We even made a group chat with the three of us so that we could work on things at home if we needed to and so we understood what we were presenting the day the judges came. Another C I did well on was collaboration. As I said before, my group and I got along really well together. We split up the work pretty evenly between the three of us so that we all collaborated by doing our own parts of the project.

Although I did good in those categories of the 6 C's, I didn't do so great in a few of the other ones. One category was conscientious learning. We were not very good with our time management skills, so we had to finish a lot of our project at home before we presented. We also had to change a few of our design plans, so that took time from the limited amount we got to work on this project. Another category would be cultural competence. A huge part of this category is self-acceptance and I am not very good at this. Whenever I make mistakes, I am not able to forgive myself right away and I think too much about everything instead of just letting it go. Therefore, I just did not excel in this category of the 6 C's.
