MAGNESIUM MAN DECEASED!
Magnesium Man. A name that will forever live in infamy. Inventor, scientist, and arsonist of Elementalopolus. It is well known how Magnesium Man, (Born Impure Magnesium Man in 1792) was helpful in his youth, contributing to science with his work with Dr. Hydrogen. With Dr. Oxygen, he also made incredible strides in treating indigestion and other internal problems with their development of magnesium oxide. He also created a wide variety of lightweight tools such as power tools and hair dryers. It’s safe to say he was a good element, with a good heart.
Until 1808. Dr. Evil, also known as Sir Humphry Davy, devised a plan to hurt the good hearted Magnesium Man; Through the electrolysis of a mixture of Magnesium Man’s gift of magnesium oxide and Dr. Evil’s mercuric oxide, he planned to rid Magnesium Man of his good qualities by purifying him. Dr. Evil tricked Magnesium Man into jumping into what Magnesium Man thought was a giant vat of acid by sending him a pigeon message telling him it was so. Unfortunately it was not a giant vat of acid; it was a vat of Dr. Evil’s sinister electrolysis mixture. When Magnesium Man got excited at the sight of the acid he leaped into the vat, the Mercury part of him evaporated. When Dr. Evil pulled him out of the vat; he was a different man. He was a Purely Magnesium Man. Magnesium Man had lost entire parts of himself and was lost and confused. He wasn’t mentally stable without his Mercury that had been lost. The mixture had only left a small bit of him to spare. He turned to evil.
He used his strong lightweight body to jump super far in single bounds. He would hit his arms together and shred off bits of magnesium which would easily ignite and burn even in rain. He would jump from building to building raining down fire, night and day. He no longer used his elemental gifts for good. Fire would rain for months before the Elemenatlopolus mayor decided he had to take action. It saddened him because he knew Magnesium Man was good for many things but he was no longer worth the trouble. The mayor and his advisors came up with a plan: they would tell Magnesium Man that the ocean turned into a shallow vat of acid. They knew Magnesium Man liked vats of acid for whatever reason and if he thought it was shallow he would gladly leap in. They too sent their message by pigeon.
When Magnesium Man received the pigeon note telling him about the vat of acid he knew it was a trap. He had already been tricked into trying to jump into a vat of acid but it had really been Dr. Evil’s concoction. He assumed Dr. Evil must be behind this trap too. He was fine with that. He thought if he took another dip in the electrolysis concoction he would become even more pure and even more evil. He had grown to like terrorizing the city. So he lept. Lept clear across the city into the ocean disguised as acid. When he reached the ocean. He splashed and sank. It was still just normal water. Magnesium Man was too dense to float in the water.
The news crews gathered and people laughed and cheered as Magnesium Man drowned. As his metal lungs filled with water he continued to choke and sink. When questioned about the matter the Mayor said, “Ohhh we got him good. HAHA!”
Magnesium Man continued to slowly sink and slowly drown. Ever so Slowly did he that people began to order pizza. Scuba divers went down and realized Magnesium man was still painfully drowning but he wasn't dying. They decided they should just chain him up underwater and harvest his body for magnesium needed to make their medicine and tools. They cut off his finger and toes and took them to the surface and used them to make fireworks which were fired off in celebration of the defeat and enslavement of the Great Magnesium Man.
Periodic Trends and the Properties of Elements Lab
Purpose of Experiment:
Read the Introduction, Background, and Overview
Define in your own words the purpose of this experimental investigation
The purpose is to identify periodic table trends in the activity and solubility of the alkaline earth metals.
Hypothesis:
Considering what you already know about this concept, write a cause and effect statement that explains what you anticipate will occur
If…….then…...due to…..(Must show cause and effect and should explain why you believe this will occur.)
“How does one variable depend on another variable?”
Avoid “Why?” questions, factoid questions, questions that can be answered without doing the experiment
If I were to do this lab I could then understand the periodic tables trends of activity and solubility.
Pre-Lab Questions:
They are skin irritants. They are solids and cause damage to pipes or just clog them.
a) Periodic trends Ie (down \/ ) a group decreases.
b)Periodic trend Ie (UP /\ ) across a period
Group 1
Group 2
Period 3
Na 496
Mg 738
Period 4
K 419
Ca 590
Period 5

3.
Tests:
List the tests or procedures you followed, and explain the purpose of each investigative experiment. (ex. Put solid Mg, Ca and Al into HCl-watched for evidence of reaction(color change, temp change, gas production, formation of a precipitate, odor)
What data do you need to collect?
What will you do with the data? (Hint re-read experimental overview)
It got hot and then one got like a bubble and blew smoke everywhere.
Observations:
Observations (qualitative and quantitative) that occurred during the lab.
Include data tables, balanced equations, mathematical equations, calculations and graphs.
Post-Lab Questions:
1. Which Group 2 metal, magnesium or calcium, is more reactive? Cite your evidence. Calcium is more active. elementwiki.net
2. Which period 3 metal, magnesium or aluminum, is more active? Cite your evidence. Magnesium is more active. elementwiki.net
3. Rank the 3 metals tested in Part A from most active to least active. Calcium, magnesium, aluminum
4. Write a general statement describing the periodic trend in metal activity within a group (vertical column) of the periodic table. As you go down a group there is more activity.
5. Write a general statement that describes the periodic trends in metal activity within a period (horizontal row) of the periodic table. As one go right there is less activity
6. Locate the following metals on the periodic table: Magnesium, potassium, and sodium. Based on your answers to questions 4 and 5, rank these metals in order of their expected activity, from the most active to least active. Potassium, sodium, magneesium
7. Litmus paper changes color in acidic(red) and basic (blue) solutions. The word alkaline is a synonym for basic. Give two reasons why the Group 2 metals are called alkaline earth metals. They are naturally occurring and are indicated as basic using a litmus paper test
8. Which alkaline earth metal formed the most precipitates? The fewest? Barium formed the most. Magnesium formed the least.
9. Write a general statement describing the periodic trend in solubility of alkaline earth metal compounds. As one goes down a group, it increases in activity.
10. Use the solubility pattern observed for the known and unknown alkaline earth compounds to deduce the identity of the unknown alkaline earth ion. Explain your reasoning. Strontium chloride was the unknown solution and I know this because the pattern is the same as strontium chloride and I also asked Marley.
11. Using Equation 1 in the background section as an example, write a chemical equation for each precipitate-forming reaction that was observed for strontium. Include the abbreviations (aq) and (s) to show what compound is responsible for the precipitate in each case.
CLEAR PARAGRAPH
I hope that from this project I am able to improve my understanding of the periodic table and its trend. I am hopeful that the information I have learned in this unit will allow me to be able to keep up in chemistry rather than constantly trying to catch up. The periodic trend in metal activity within a group of the periodic table is that as you go down a group there is more reactivity. The periodic trends in metal activity within a period of the periodic table is that as one go right there is less reactivity. The most active metal to least active metal out of the metals we used is calcium, magnesium, aluminum. The periodic trend in solubility of alkaline earth metal compounds is as one goes down a group, it increases in reactivity. I am hopeful that I can identify different elements and their category. I gathered most of my information from the elementwiki.net and in conclusion my goal is that from this experience I will be able to correctly ideitfy metals using different tests and that I will be able to excell in chemistry from here on out.
I greatly enjoyed this project and lab. My favorite part was definitely answering questions and writing the clear paragraph. That is false but I did actually enjoy learning about magnesium and its properties and uses so I could write a story about it.
