For this project, all students in this class were given the opportunity to research and report on a team sport. For my project, I chose to research the sport of ultimate frisbee, often called ultimate. I researched the rules, culture, history, and controversies of this often over looked sport.
The first half of this two-part project was the written essay. For this assignment, I had to do a large amount of research, as ultimate is a relatively new sport, and as such, there is not much information about it. In the end, I believe that I wrote a complete essay, outlining as much information as I could.
For the second half of the project, I was tasked with creating a presentation about the rules and strategies of ultimate frisbee. This assignment was much easier, as the regulations and game plans are easy to find online. For this project I ended up with a compelling presentation that was informational and organized.
SKILL COMPONENTS OF FITNESS
Agility
Players require agility when dodging opponents, and getting to an open portion of the field.
Speed
Players require speed when running across the field, either to catch a disk, or to outrun a defender.
Coordination
Players require coordination because they are likely to play many different positions during the game.
While these are not all of the skill components of fitness, these are the ones that are most clearly used while playing ultimate frisbee.
HEALTH COMPONENTS OF FITNESS
Endurance
Players require endurance when running a lot in the game without tiring themselves out.
Although this is not the only health component of fitness, this is the one that is most obviously used while playing ultimate.
OFFENSE AND DEFENSE
I learned about offensive and defensive strategies while doing this project, such as the man on man defense and ISO Kamikaze offense. This showed me how much thought and time goes into playing a team sport, and how important it is to have good team communication.
There are two things that I believe I did well during this project: critical thinking and communication. I believe that I demonstrated critical thinking when researching ultimate frisbee. Some of the information that I hoped to find was not clearly accessible, meaning that I would have to extrapolate information from tangential resources. This is an example of critical thinking, because I had to find answers to questions that did not have a simple answer. Secondly, I demonstrated communication when presenting my slide show. I believe that I organized my slides in a way that was easy to understand, while still conveying all of the needed information to my classmates. I believe that my project was quite successful overall, and these are two skills that improved thanks to it.
While I can always improve, and better the skills that I used during this project, there are two skills that I would like to focus on improving for my next project: creativity and being a conscientious learner. Firstly, I feel as if my essay and presentation were somewhat bland. I effectively conveyed all of the information, but I do not believe that it was communicated in a fun or enticing way. For my future essays, I may want to include facts that interest me, on top of the required information. I believe that this would captivate the reader more effectively. As for my slide presentation, I could have used a more colorful or decorative theme. This would have allowed the audience to focus on my presentation more effectively, along with that, I could have added comedic moments, as the presentation was not too serious or formal. I could also have improved on being a conscientious learner, as I underestimated the amount of research I needed to do for the essay. I had a lot of homework that week, and I assumed that I would be able to quickly gather the information that I needed. This was not the case. I ended up spending 3 or 4 hours researching the sport, and another 2 1/2 hours writing the report. I wish that I would have planned out the work better, and managed my time more effectively. Overall, I am quite pleased with the outcome of this project, but there are always ways that I could improve.
