The Project
For this project, our group of 3 was assigned to build 3 different instruments, a wind, a string, and a chime. These instruments had to be able to play a full octave of notes. I made my chimes play C4 to C5. We only had a few days to build these instruments how we wanted them. I made my chimes out of PVC pipe and they are played like a xylophone.
Before building my chimes, I first had to create a blueprint of the chimes and their different lengths. In my bluprint I had wanted to make my chimes hanging, but when we started building I realized that would have been difficult. Instead I made a box to lay my chimes across. The final part of this project was to present our instruments and create an optional song, which we chose to do.
Content
Frequency: Frequency is the number of vibrations or waves per second. The equation for frequency is f = v / λ. It is measured in Hertz (Hz).
Wavelength: Wavelength is the distance from one wave crest to the next crest. Its equation is λ = v / f. Wavelength is measured in meters.
Wave Speed: Wave speed is the speed at which a wave travels. The equation is v = λf. Wave speed is measured in meters per second (m/s).
Amplitude: Amplitude is the distance from the midpoint to the max point of a wave. Amplitude is measured in meters.
Transverse Wave: Transverse waves oscillate perpendicularly to the direction of the waves advance.
Longitudinal Wave: Wave oscillates parallel to the direction of wave travel.
Electromagnetic Spectrum: The electromagnetic spectrum is the range of electromagnetic waves organized by frequency and wavelength. Radio, microwave, infrared, visible, ultraviolet, x-ray, gamma ray.
Ionizing Waves: Ionizing waves have enough energy to remove electrons from atoms, ionizing them.
Non-Ionizing Waves: Waves that don't have enough energy to remove electrons from atoms.
Reflection
Overall, this project was pretty fun. I enjoyed building and playing my instrument. This unit was pretty long and we focused a lot on waves and wavelengths. For this project, I think I could have improved on my creativity. I did a design that a lot of people did, and the notes I played were pretty basic. I also think I can improve on my collaboration. For this project we each built our own instruments, but I could have though of more ideas for a song. Some things I think I did well on for this project were communication and critical thinking. I communicated with my group members when I needed to, and I think that helped us on our project. I also had to think about how I would build my instrument and went through some different ideas. This project went pretty well.
