It helps helps high school students develop business skills and prepare for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management. Along with the competitive element, DECA participation provides you networking and scholarship opportunities. Roughly 20,000 DECA students, chaperones and advisors, from around the world, attend the international conference/competition each year.

Description: The Peer Leadership Program provides junior and senior students with an opportunity to influence school life by promoting personal growth and development of their classmates. Peer leaders are trained to assist others in adjusting to high school and dealing with issues, concerns and demands confronting the high school student. Fall Peer Leadership class meets 5 periods a week with a freshmen orientation class that meets during day 1 once a week. In this class, peer leaders lead discussion as well as conduct interactive activities that improve understanding, acceptance and open communication. Spring Peer Leadership class meets 3 periods a week and plans several school and community service projects and events. For more information please see Mrs. Miller in the library.

Description: The major goal of the Peer Mentors Program is to help and support freshmen and other new students in their transition to life at HMHS. Typically, over 200 new students are paired up with individual Peer Mentors or Peer Mentoring teams. The pairings are based on the activities and interests of the new students and Peer Mentors. Peer Mentors are expected to maintain contact with their new students during the summer and school year, answer questions about HMHS, provide information about classes and activities, and give the new students one or more personalized tours of the school. Dr.. Tarrant, who coordinates the efforts of the Peer Mentors, can be found in the main office.

Description: The Student Council was founded in 1984. The Student Council elects officers for the upcoming year at the end of the school year. Sophomores may run for Vice President and Juniors may run for President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Historian. Students campaign and present a speech in front of the student body.
At the end of each year, there are class elections where members of each class can run to be President, Vice President, Secretary, or Treasurer; they help organize class events. Also, students can choose to run to be a delegate from their grade to participate in Student Council. All of the officers and delegates meet monthly in a formal session.
Decisions are made that affect the school climate and culture, like new clubs and how activities will be run. The faculty advisors are Mr. Romea in room C222 and Ms. McCormick in the humanities office.
