Museum School Dictionary

Key to Museum School Lingo (and other acronyms you may not know):

  • PBD - Place Based Design

  • Theme Core - the combination of Social Studies, Science, and ELA (English) classes, and sometimes math. In 9th and 10th grade, students spend three hours of the day in theme core classes.

  • PBIS - Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS celebrations are celebrations to reward us for good behavior)

  • Formative Task - tasks that prepare you for a performance task.

  • Launch Task - tasks that demonstrate you are ready for a performance task. Graded either proficient on not yet proficient.

  • Performance Task - tasks that demonstrate mastery of content. Could include tests, final projects, or other products. Graded not yet proficient, proficient, or excel.

  • LGR - Learner Growth Reviews. The museum school version of parent teacher conferences are student led and aim to showcase student work to parents.

  • Dual Enrollment - courses students can take through GRCC, KCAD, or GVSU

Museum High School Classes

  • ELA - English Language Arts. Integrated english classes for grade level content. Taught by Mrs. Hewett (9th grade), Ms. Canales (10th grade) and Ms. Anderson (11th grade), and Ms. Koole (12th grade). AP Language and Composition is an optional course instead of English 11.

  • Integrated Science - science classes that integrate biology, chemistry, physics, earth science, and more. Co-taught by Mr. Langel (mostly 9th and 11th grade) and Mr. Hoff (mostly 10th and 11th grade).

  • Global and Local History - Social studies classes for grades 9 and 10 encompassing both US History and World History. Taught by Ms. Lane (9th grade) and Mr. Kruid (10th grade)

  • Society and Self - Social sudies class for grade 11 encompassing both economics and government. Taught by Mr. Peterson

  • Computer Apps - required half credit class for 9th and 10th grade. Taught by Mr. Lawton

  • Advisory - social emotional learning and preparation for senior capstone project. Taught by various teachers.

  • Math - Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Precalculus taught by Mr. Garlets. Geometry taught by Ms. Chaffin.

  • Spanish - Spanish 1 and 2 offered to all students. Spanish 3 offered to 11th grade students. Taught by Ms. Jasinski.

  • PE and Health - PE and Health integrated into an urban environment. Taught by Ms. Mabin

  • Art - Art and honors art offered. Taught by Ms. Hadley.

  • Choir - Choir and honors choir offered. Taught by Ms. Plouhar.

  • Debate - Taught by Mrs. Hewett (offered 1st SM only)

  • Psychology - Taught by Ms. Lane

  • CAD - Computer Aided Design. Cad 1 and 2 taught by Mr. Lawton.

  • Curation - Taught by Mr. Kruid.
