Museum student feedback on GRCC classes!
Course Code: FR 101
Credit hours: 4
Professor: Natalie Abdou
Students took this class virtually (met online via zoom).
Difficulty Ratings: 7/10 (this class was fairly difficult)
"The difficulty was not awful, but there are many assignments given each week (Between 40 and 60). Most of them are not difficult, but there are some, usually only 5 or 10 a week, that can hang you up for hours if you have a hard time understanding the language. The tests and quizzes were also semi-difficult.""It's difficult learning a language, but the class itself was easy to keep up with and understand. As well as there is always the resource of reaching out to the professor which is very helpful if there's a problem."Grade of student when taking the class: 11th
Worktime ratings: 6/10
"Though there were a lot of assignments, it usually only took a couple hours twice a week to get through them. The time problem was the actual classes. Classes were twice a week, 2 hours each. 4:45-6:45."Recommend?
"I would recommend the class, you learn at a good pace, and the work is not too difficult. The professor was great and always helped when it was needed. The work was difficult, but not too difficult. I learned a lot and was never truly swamped with work."
"Yes, I would recommend this class as well as this professor. I personally decided to switch to a fully asynchronous course for the second semester, but the virtual meetings are helpful for practice speaking and for visual learning."
What were assignments like?
"I had a two hour virtual night class to attend on Mondays and Wednesdays. The lessons were assigned in different units(that are split in half, ex. 1A, 1B) that ranged 1-3 weeks depending on the difficulty of the unit. At the end of each unit there's a test and a project, and throughout there are activities to complete and discussion questions to respond to. Assignments were due every Wednesday and every Sunday. There wasn't a midterm, but there was a final exam. Overall I think the assignments were helpful to my learning and comprehension."

"Deadlines are often, usually with a lot of work. Assignments are plentiful and may be difficult to keep track of."Grade of student when taking the class: 11th
Worktime ratings: 7/10
"There are a lot of assignments, and they can take a long time. Sometimes the content in the assignments are not explicitly covered and it can be confusing."Recommend?
"If you're looking to progress in French, I would recommend this class. It is not absurdly difficult, and the curriculum is well rounded with plenty of assessments to see what you need to work on. The professor is also always available to help you."
What were assignments like?
"There can be up to 40 assignments per week. Most of the assignments are short and will take less than five minutes, but certain assignments can take a good while. You will probably spend between half an hour and two hours twice a week on assignments.
Deadlines for the class are Wednesday and Sunday, each week. Each week there are two quizzes. Every week and a half (ish) there is a test. Every other week there is a partner dialogue where you need to work with someone to write a script, memorize it, and record it. Every other week there is also an IPA (Integrated Performance Assessment) which is essentially just a big assignment that can take hours.
There was no dedicated midterm, but classwork does pick up at that point. The final is a big test that covers each unit discussed throughout the semester. Reading is light for this class."
Other Recommendations
If you do badly on a quiz or test, contact the professor. She is great and loves to help. This class covers most of the fundamentals for the language, so it is important to really understand topics.

This student was already mostly fluent in Chinese, so the classes were fairly easy. This isn't necessarily reflective of a beginner student taking these classes.
Recommend?
"Yes. It is a good class for learning Chinese they use good textbooks that are accurate. However for northern Chinese speakers like me some of the words the professor used may be confusing and annoying."
What were assignments like?
"A quiz once a week and listening and identification homework."

"I did have to spend at least 5 hours a week on it"Recommend?
"Yes I learned a lot but you have to be willing to commit time to it"
What were assignments like?
"Yes, if you are interested in a challenge. Dr. Carey is great, she's very helpful and responds quickly, and offers extra credit options. The course load is pretty significant, so if you work or do sports, it might be difficult."
