Skill Demonstration Events (SDEs) are FCCLA competitive events that allow members to demonstrate hands-on, real-world skills related to Family and Consumer Sciences and career pathways. These events focus on showing what students can do, using skills learned in FCS classes and through FCCLA involvement. SDEs are a great introduction to FCCLA competition, as they require less time than STAR Events while still helping members build confidence, professionalism, and college- and career-readiness skills. All FCCLA members are eligible to compete in SDEs at the national level.
To compete in a Skill Demonstration Event (SDE), you must be an active FCCLA member enrolled in a Family and Consumer Sciences course. Choose an SDE that matches your interests or skills, then review the official event guidelines to understand the rules, time limits, and scoring criteria. Practice the required skills and prepare any materials listed in the guidelines. You will compete at the state level if your state offers that SDE, and qualifying members may advance to compete at the national level.
