The Hope Branch, Malaysia (2021-2022)
The Hope Branch Malaysia is a non-profit organization that aims to aid the homeless, disabled and blind community post-lockdown especially those that incurred heavy financial loss during the pandemic. It has successfully fundraised more than $200K since 2022 and is still soaring high.
During my school holidays spent back in my home country Malaysia, I actively volunteered at weekly food distribution sessions at Chow Kit and Anjung Kelana. Together as a team, we have distributed more than 600 meals to the needy.
This experience has helped me develop a great empathy towards others, through interacting with the less fortunate and instill a sense of gratitude in everything I do. With this, I hope to continue giving back to the general community as a student, a caregiver and a community lover.
Participating in a service learning event at Lions Befrienders Ghim Moh was an incredibly enriching experience, especially as it coincided with Singapore's National Day Parade (NDP) and the nationwide Service Learning Day. As a class, we took it upon ourselves to organize a special NDP celebration session for the elderly residents, a day dedicated to giving back to society.
In the lead-up to the event, we faced several challenges. We brainstormed tirelessly to come up with engaging and relatable activities that would evoke nostalgia and ensure everyone had a good time. Rehearsals were crucial to ensure that the event ran smoothly and that we could provide the elderly residents with a memorable experience.
On the actual day of the event, I was paired with an elderly lady who could only speak Hokkien, a dialect not familiar to most of my classmates. Despite the language barrier, I made every effort to communicate with her, and as we interacted, I discovered that she was a remarkably healthy 91-year-old. Learning about her life and family background was genuinely heartwarming. Throughout the celebration session, we engaged the elderly residents with activities such as bingo, arts and crafts, where I personally crafted a bouquet of origami and a joyful karaoke session.
This service learning experience taught me the value of overcoming challenges, connecting with people from different backgrounds, and the joy that comes from giving back to the community. It was a day filled with warmth, connection, and the realization that even small acts of kindness can make a significant difference in the lives of others.
Project Clover is founded by a YMCA Youth For Cause team from St. Joseph’s Institution and affiliated with the Singapore Cancer Society aiming to spread awareness about cancer.
I contributed to the organization as the Head of Creative and Merchandising by leading 30 Creative Team Members in merchandise designing like custom stickers, tote bags, bucket hats and video editing. We successfully fundraised more than $2K to provide medical and financial support to cancer patients.
Eldercare at Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital
(2022-Present)
During the Mid Autumn Festival in 2022, I had the opportunity to assist elderly individuals in wheelchairs as we strolled along the scenic Kallang River. It was a joy to accompany them during the sing-along session, creating a memorable experience for all.
Another meaningful event occurred on March 25th, 2023, when I volunteered to accompany the elderly on an outing to the beautiful Flower Dome at Gardens by the Bay. Being able to assist and share in their enjoyment of the stunning floral displays was a rewarding experience. These experiences of providing companionship and support to the elderly have deepened my appreciation for their stories and wisdom. It has also reaffirmed my commitment to making a positive difference in their lives and cherishing the moments we spend together.
