Dear Asian Youth is a youth-led, global organization that promotes intersectional activism, solidarity with other marginalized communities, and equality and equity.
During my time with the organization as the creative graphic designer, I had the privilege of participating in workshops on diversity and inclusivity, as well as contributing to significant projects. These experiences have shaped my approach to design, fostered a deeper understanding of social issues, and fueled my commitment to promoting accurate and holistic representation.
Some workshops I had undergone include the diversity and inclusivity workshop where I was educated on the importance of intersectionality in our approach to activism and advocacy. I learned that social issues are interconnected and that addressing them requires an inclusive and holistic perspective. which prompted me to reflect on the usage of inclusive language and imagery. This understanding profoundly influenced my design process, as I become more conscious of illustration elements and being extra mindful of cultural sensitivities and avoiding stereotypes. This is so that I can foster a deeper appreciation for the nuances and challenges faced by marginalized communities, and create work that fosters a sense of belonging and resonates with diverse audiences. I also had the opportunity to engage with Instagram virality guides which provided invaluable insights into creating engaging posts that capture the attention of our audience. By leveraging these strategies, I was able to utilize the Instagram algorithm, amplify our messages and extend our reach, effectively communicating our mission and fostering meaningful engagement.
I had the opportunity to contribute to monthly projects that have further deepened my appreciation for the power of design in advancing social causes. The first project centred around the festival Nawruz, a celebration of cultural diversity within the Asian community, where I got to honour the cultural significance of Nawruz and highlight the diverse experiences within the Asian community, broadening my knowledge and fostering a profound sense of appreciation for our shared heritage. The second project focused on shedding light on young Asian actors who deserve recognition, where I was able to contribute to a more inclusive and diverse media landscape, especially amongst the Western-dominated entertainment field. Another notable project would be the banned book recommendations which emphasizes the importance of intellectual freedom, highlight the voices of marginalized authors, and challenge the restrictions imposed on literature. Through engaging designs and persuasive narratives, I sought to ignite conversations about censorship, advocate for the right to free expression, and encourage readers to explore the transformative power of banned literature.
These projects have reinforced my commitment to advocating for accurate representation and social justice through design, whilst utilitizing my greatest skillset, one that I enjoy and hope to continously improve. By leveraging visual storytelling, I aspire to challenge societal norms, spark critical conversations, and inspire positive action
