This artwork was done in 2020 During the NDP goodie bag art competion.
My artwork reflects upon several aspects of Singapore that she is most proud of. Drawn on the leftmost hand are mouthwatering local favourites like chilli crab, tu tu kueh, satay, chicken rice and roti prata. This is a powerful representation of Singapore’s reputation as a Southeast Asian food haven, where some of the world’s most affordable Michelin-listed meals can be found dotted throughout humble hawker centres.
The hand in the middle pays homage to our essential workers, who I respects because of their valiant efforts during the Covid-19 crisis. Meanwhile, the hand on the right depicts national icons like the Merlion, Singapore Flyer and Vanda Miss Joaquim flower. My uncle’s job as a policeman has given me insights on and deep respect for frontline workers. By portraying these different hands all raised together, I wished to emphasize how these different aspects come together to create a truly distinctive Singapore.
Together, A Stronger Singapore!
I was one of the ten winners out of 1,200+ competitors in this competition.
The experience was incredibly fun, as I got to learn more about Singapore's culture and the unique aspects of my country. I also had to think carefully about color selection since we were only allowed to use three colors for our artwork. Additionally, I spent valuable time with my parents, discussing and brainstorming ideas on how to make my artwork stand out from the rest.
