For Fall semester 2022, I was placed at Hamilton Meadow Park. During my time there, I cycled through 15 different classrooms grades kindergarten through fifth grade. Each classroom provided a different experience and each teacher had their own ways of teaching. In order to prepare for full time student teaching, I worked with groups of all ages and levels on classwork, assessments, and homework. I was also given the opportunity to teach a few lessons to a variety of classes and learn what it means to reach the needs of every learner.
For, a class project and in preparation for CAL TPA's, I had the opportunity to fully plan, develop, teach, and reflect on a practice lesson. For this practice lesson, I focused on literacy, led by a mentor text.
During my time at Hamilton Meadow Park, I taught many individual groups with students who were at many different academic levels. I worked with high-achieving students and modified the curriculum for students who needed extra help.
For another assigned lesson, I taught an Odd's and Even's lesson, complete with a kinesthetic assessment activity. This lesson was a hit and I had another teacher request that I teach it in her class!
Student Teaching (14 weeks)
As part of my program at Hamilton Meadow Park, I volunteered as a student teacher in two different classrooms: a first/second-combination class and a third-grade class. During my time volunteering, I taught a new subject each week, until eventually "taking over" the classroom for one week. Part of my duties included: developing lesson plans, interacting with parents/staff, collaborating with teachers to strategize, attending staff meetings, and much more. During my student teaching, I learned more than ever before and was able to put all of my new learnings into practice.
This video demonstrates one of the lessons taught during my solo week at my first/second-grade combo class placement. This lesson revolves around writing narrative stories from personal experiences, with an emphasis on using descriptive nouns. During this lesson, I used multiple supports including visuals on the slideshow, engaging students through their interests: drawing, and providing sentence starters for ELL students. Additionally, I surveyed the room and worked independently with students to check for understanding and clear up misunderstandings.
