For my first fieldwork location, I was assigned to Ms. Doving's fourth and fifth grade combination class at Bahia Vista Elementary School, San Rafael. During my time there, I was able to observe many teaching techniques, help the teacher with lessons, connect with students, and overall learn about what it takes to effectively teach.
For the first day, I became acclimated with my teacher, Ms. Doving, and her class of fourth and fifth graders. I was able to observe a math lesson involving fractions and an English lesson where students had to write a persuasive paragraph.
Takeaway: Each student has a different background and story which teachers must acknowledge
For my second fieldwork day, I observed a math and social studies lesson. I learned many different tactics to engage students and effectively teach the material. I also focused on how the classroom was set-up.
Takeaway: Being passionate about the subject is crucial if you'd like for your students to remain engaged throughout the lesson
For my third fieldwork day, a poetry teacher came into the class and taught a lesson on creating poems. The students then wrote their poems in the shape of the subject they were writing about. I helped students with their poems and made connections with them. This was a picture I took of a student's great work.
Takeaway: A great way to engage students is to bring in a professional member of the community that can lead an activity
My fourth day of fieldwork day, involved me helping out with a math lesson about adding improper fractions. I helped students at the back table with their fraction worksheet. I also went to the library with the class and picked out books with students
Takeaway: It's always extremely helpful and less stressful when the lesson plan and instructions are planned out before hand
For my fifth fieldwork day, I observed and helped students out with a social studies scavenger hunt. Fourth graders were learning about colonial America and fifth graders worked on their state brochures. I was able to help several students with their worksheet and learn about their aspirations.
Takeaway: Keeping students active is very important and overall keeps them engaged throughout the day.
For the final day of fieldwork, fifth graders worked on their brochures and fourth graders worked on their gold rush projects. I was able to eat lunch with my teacher and ask her questions about the lesson plan she created. Ms. Doving also played "around the world math" and other memorization games with her students.
Takeaway: I learned different strategies to help students understand and memorize the times tables
Overall, I enjoyed observing and helping with Ms. Doving's teaching. Ms. Doving taught me techniques and important life tools I will need as a future teacher. I became inspired through her lesson plans and teaching throughout the experience. I was able to meet students from different backgrounds with different aspirations in life. Additionally, I established relationships with teachers and staff at Bahia Vista. I'm proud to have been a part of the Bahia Vista dragon community!
