I created this slideshow to help my 5th grade students write Research Questions for their Genius Hour Project using the Icons of Depth & Complexity, which are meant to help them dig deeper into their topic of choice. Creating this slideshow, which featured some fun memes, helped students engage with the material by catering to their interests. Additionally, I translated instructions to Spanish so that my ELLs would be on task and feel comfortable as well.
Teaching Using TEDEd Lessons
In my 5th grade classroom, I decided to create a lesson for Earth Day using the TEDEd website. This lesson is really interactive and fun for the kids to explore how we can make positive changes to help our Earth.
We first watched, "The Life Cycle of a Plastic Bottle," before answering questions that I created and placed directly on the my TEDEd Lesson page.
Additionally, this lesson format allows teachers to add other resources to stretch student thinking.
Utilizing the SeeSaw Platform
In my student teaching I have been observing and using various classroom technologies. The one I have had the most experience with is Seesaw. This platform allows teachers to not only connect directly with students, but also with parents. Teachers are able to post videos and create interactive assignments. Students also have the ability to actively engage with their assignments by recording themselves speaking. This app has been a great tool for me to access materials necessary to help students in small breakout rooms via Zoom as well. Attached is an exploration of the features of the Seesaw teaching and learning platform!
Explain Everything App for Distance Learning
For one of my Zoom math lessons I utilized the Explain Everything app, which allowed me to upload the math page students were working on and write directly on the virtual page using my stylus. During my lesson I shared my screen for students to be able to see the problems and how we were solving them in real time. Attached is a google slide show about the lesson, including standards and reflections on ways in which I can better my future lessons to meet the needs of all students.
