I was able to gather and review children's books relating to the LGBTQIA+ community in my Teaching for Equity Course. I was specifically interested in finding books that focused on gender equity, since I want to help my students become empathetic and respectful learners, as well as social justice advocates. Including books about the gay community and gender equity is a great way to normalize and embrace differences. All of the books on this list are thought provoking and great tools to facilitate meaningful conversations about the LGBTQ community.
In one of my graduate classes we were given the opportunity to observe a math lesson being taught to a 6th grade bilingual class in San Diego, CA. The lesson was followed by a lesson study, in which a group of teachers from other schools gave the 6th grade teacher constructive feedback on her teaching. It was clear to everyone observing this 6th grade teacher that her teaching philosophy centered on the idea that in order to facilitate student learning a classroom must be full of love and equity. If her students asked for the directions in Spanish, she gave them in both English and Spanish. Her accommodations and encouragement towards all of her students was a perfect example of what an equitable classroom should look like.
