When it comes to fostering creativity in the classroom, it is best to make a variety of artistic materials accessible to students at all times. In my Transitional Kindergarten class, I always had a stack of coloring pages, scrap paper, crayons, and colored pencils available for my students to grab. During free choice time many of them would gravitate towards these materials.
Setting up various sensory table activities was also a wonderful way in which my students were able to explore math and science concepts through tactile learning.
After spending time familiarizing themselves with the planets in our solar system, 5th Graders got to work creating papier-mâché planets. In this cross curricular lesson, students were given the opportunity to explore astronomy using a hands on artistic approach. Throughout this activity students were planning what color to paint their planet to make their models as accurate a depiction as possible.
Dr. Jean's "Banana Dance", or "Guacamole Song" is always a hit! Taking the time to get students moving throughout the day is of the utmost importance. It's especially fun for students when the teacher engages in the physical activity as well. By incorporating fun physical activities during the school day, teachers are modeling and cultivating healthy practices for students.
