Purposes of Practicum
Being part of the SeaTeacher program is a golden opportunity for me. I deeply enjoy my work as a teacher, which fuels my passion to continuously improve and become better. I feel challenged to prove that I am worthy of being a teacher. I believe the goals of this program have been successfully achieved, as I have learned new insights about classroom management, lesson planning, and implementing effective teaching methods from diverse perspectives influenced by different cultures and countries, each with their unique approaches.
Procedures of Practicum
Before directly teaching, I was given the opportunity to conduct classroom observations. During this process, I learned many new things about the methods and approaches used in teaching. Additionally, I actively engaged in discussions and exchanged ideas with the cooperating teacher and the head lecturer of the Early Childhood Education program regarding lesson plan preparation. I also received plenty of advice and feedback that motivated me to give my best when teaching. Although the learning period was relatively short due to unfavorable weather conditions, it did not diminish my opportunities to gain valuable insights. Moreover, my friends from the Philippines greatly helped me understand the culture, learning styles, and teaching methods at the school, which significantly enriched my experience.
Outcomes of Practicum
Honestly, this was my first experience teaching in an international classroom, and I cannot deny the concerns I had about language barriers and cultural differences, which presented their own challenges. However, the students' enthusiasm during the learning process inspired me to bring out the best in myself. Even so, I realize there is still much for me to learn, particularly in managing the class effectively. Overall, I am quite satisfied with what I have achieved.
The Challage of Practicum
The main challenge I faced was time. Limited time due to unfavorable weather conditions somewhat reduced my opportunities to interact and learn more with the children. I usually take time to get to know each child personally to understand their character and apply a suitable and enjoyable teaching method. However, despite this challenge, I was greatly supported by the advice and moral encouragement from my cooperating teacher, lecturers, and friends, which helped me overcome the difficulties effectively.
Overall Impression
I am deeply grateful and truly enjoyed this brief yet meaningful journey. The warm welcome and embraces from my friends have reignited my spirit to become someone who makes a meaningful impact on others. Right now, being a teacher is my biggest dream, but the encounters and experiences shared with children, teachers, lecturers, and especially my fellow aspiring teachers have inspired me to aim higher—I don’t want to be just an ordinary teacher. I aspire to be someone who inspires my students, passing on the same passion and enthusiasm that we have built together. My hope is that this flame of spirit will continue to burn and be passed down to future generations.
Suggestions for future improvement
I hope this program can be extended, as there are still many new things we haven't had the chance to learn due to time constraints. In particular, some SeaTeacher areas frequently experience weather disruptions, so it would be better to schedule the program in those regions more strategically. This way, learning opportunities will not be cut short or limited by such conditions. That is all the feedback I have to offer.
