Before starting the learning activity, I applied Gagne's Nine Events of Instruction as my teaching approach. Gagne's Nine Events of Instruction is a framework designed to guide the instructional design process. These events are a series of steps that educators can follow to enhance the learning experience for their students. Here’s the following steps of Gagne’s Nine Events of Instructions
Gaining students attention : Ensure the learners are ready to learn and participate in activities by presenting a stimulus to capture their attention. These are a few methods for capturing learners’ attention. For example, ask students with trigger questions, stimulate students with novelty, lead an ice breaker activity and many more.
Informing the learning objectives : Inform students of the objectives or outcomes for the course and individual lessons to help them understand what they are expected to learn and do. Provide objectives before instruction begins.
Recalling of prior learning : Assist students in comprehending new information by connecting it to their existing knowledge or past experiences. The teacher can conduct several activities such as asking questions about past experiences, establishing connections between earlier course content and the present subject, and encouraging students to integrate prior learning into ongoing activities.
Presenting the content : Utilize effective instructional methods to present and signal lesson content for enhanced comprehension. Arrange and categorize the material in meaningful structures and offer explanations following demonstrations.
Providing learning guidance : Guide students on effective learning strategies and inform them about available resources, essentially teaching them how to learn. For instance, offer necessary instructional assistance, such as scaffolding that can be gradually removed as students become proficient in mastering tasks or content.
Eliciting student’s performance : Encourage students to put into practice what they've learned, reinforcing newly acquired skills and knowledge while confirming a precise grasp of course concepts.
Providing feedback : Give feedback on students' performance to evaluate and support their learning, enabling them to recognize areas of misunderstanding.
Assessing students performance : Test the students whether the learning objective have been achieved previously
Enhancing retention and transfer : Incorporating spaced repetition to strengthen understanding over time, the instructor can highlight the key concepts covered and outline the tasks students should undertake in preparation for the upcoming session.
