One of the original inspirations for this game was the idea of people on a train underground stuck in an endless loop who did not realize they were going nowhere until they had successfully completed the loop. That idea has evolved heavily over time into Railway Nomads but the fundamental concept remains in tact: people on a train in a close network that they cannot escape.
The primary gameplay loop of Railway Nomads will revolve around the repeating process of travelling between nodes on a closed railways network. Each node on the World Map is a Local Map which the players must enter, and meet then requirements to move on to a new map.
This process can be broken down into:
Choose a Local Map to go to from the World Map
Use Resource Gathering, Resource Consumption, Combat and Puzzle mechanics while working towards requirements for leaving the Local Map
Move out of Local Map and return to World Map.
Once within a Local Map the players will need to engage with the Survival Mechanics while also working towards unlocking the Level Exit Gate. The whole time they are doing this a deadly Fog will be closing in behind them.
Players in the Local Map will control a single Character directly in a top-down isometric view using directional movement inputs which will turn the character in the direction of the input and move on a regular grid.
Activities which players will need to perform while in the Local Map include:
Gather, cook & eat Food to keep Hunger down
Defending themselves/hunt AI controlled Animals (which will also provide Food)
Gather Metal and/or Wood to perform maintenance on Tools & Rail Cars or convert Metal into Medical Supplies
Move Train incrementally towards Level Exit Gate to stay ahead of Fog
Collect Special Resources or Solve Puzzle to open Level Exit Gate
