Make-up work is posted in Google Classroom by 10:30 a.m. each school day. Make-up work will not be provided in advance since Ms. Wyatt never knows exactly which activities will be completed (or added/deleted!) until she has taught the lesson to 1st/2nd hour.
When you return, check your mailbox for handouts.
Read the AGENDA on Google Classroom for each date of your absence. All make-up work will be posted there!
Contact Ms. Wyatt (before/after school, during advisory, or via email) if you have questions about what was handed out, assigned, or taught during your absence.
Complete work assigned during your absence in a timely manner. You will have two school days for each one day of absence to turn in the work (ie: absent 2 days = 4 days to complete the work). If you need additional time to complete make-up work, email Ms. Wyatt.
We have a full and rigorous curriculum. It is important that you dedicate your best effort to assigned class work and daily reading (25 minutes) outside of class. Occasionally extra opportunities such as writing contests and educational games will be offered for students who wish to sharpen their growth mindset and potential. The extra credit reward will be intrinsic only, and not worth points in the grade book. ELA 7 does not offer extra credit work.
SAVE YOUR GRADED WORK until you've checked the portal to be sure the grade was posted correctly.
Check the portal on a weekly basis so you are immediately aware of missing work.
Utilize your planner to maximize academic success.
If you have a question about a grade, contact Ms. Wyatt immediately (before school, after school, or via email). Remember to click on the score in the portal to see if comments were left for you.
If the portal shows "mi" for an item you believe you've turned in, check the following places: no name board, student portfolio (in the classroom), red binder, locker, graded work basket (in the classroom), and extra copies. Be sure to also read the comments in Inf. Campus since it's possible you turned in incomplete work.
Be patient when waiting for assignments to be graded and posted. To be fair to all students, grades will not be posted until all 80+ assignments are graded.
Late work is graded once per week. Please do not ask/email Ms. Wyatt about scores for late work unless the grade isn't posted by 5 days after you've submitted it.
Check your planner! Time is provided during the first five minutes of class for you to fill out your planner.
Phone a friend to ask if you've forgotten to complete your planner.
Read the AGENDA posts in Google Classroom.
To practice and extend the skills learned in class.
To prepare for an in-class activity/discussion/lesson which will be presented the next day.
To develop work habits and organizational skills.
To establish the habit of life-long learning.
Typical homework will include reading (25 minutes per night is the district requirement) and a short activity (word study, prereading, etc.) to prepare for tomorrow's in-class activities. Remember, language arts is a two-period class...so the amount of homework may be higher than in other classes.
Taking responsibility for utilizing your student planner is an important step in being successful. Homework is written in your planner upon entering the classroom. If you realize you've forgotten to record your homework, consider calling a buddy from class to see what they have written in their planner or see Ms. Dircks during advisory period. Google Classroom is another great reference place.
Please see Ms. Dircks at advisory time! If you are at home, contact me and I'll reply as soon as I can. You can also reach out to a classmate and ask for homework help. I'm here to HELP YOU and I want YOU to be SUCCESSFUL. Please contact me as soon as you realize you are struggling, and do not wait until the night before an assignment is due date to seek teacher help.
Check the grade portal frequently to be sure all assigned work has been turned in. Remember: using your student planner each day will ensure you AVOID missing work!
I have approximately 80 students. Ten minutes per assignment = 800 minutes (over 12 hours)! During the school day I use my prep time (time without students) to lesson plan, contact parents, collaborate with other teachers, and complete paperwork. I do all of my grading at home. I apologize for the wait and can assure you that I will work as quickly as I can...but I return assignments only when ALL are graded so that I am fair to everyone.
