During my sophomore year, I attended my first Global Summit at the Cormier Youth Center. I got to work on a lot of entertaining and engaging workshops, such as creating lei's, henna tattoos, and rock painting. I also learned salsa dancing and used The Portal to communicate with someone abroad. Our task for the Design Challenge was to conserve cultural importance that exists in human civilization, ranging from tangible cultural items to intangible cultural assets. After some brainstorming, my group came up with the idea to conserve the Latin language by expanding educational possibilities and using language to help people comprehend mythological and historical narratives.
For the Global Summit of 2023 at Old Town Hall, Clean Energy & Sustainable Cities was the theme. The workshop activities in this event were all relevant to these aims. One activity that I particularly loved was the scavenger hunt in which we were allowed to go into town and look for certain sustainable things that are already in use in Andover. This project taught me about Andover's goal of becoming ecologically sustainable, as well as how the town is contributes to environmental preservation. For our design challenge, we were charged with mitigating the consequences of dam removal on the Shawsheen River in such a manner that the river's natural flow is restored while without affecting the communities that live along it.
The Global Summit of 2024 was my 3rd and final summit at Old Town Hall. The central theme for this event, Life of Land and Underwater. Our keynote speaker, Dr. Micah Miller, a loon conservation researcher, discussed evolutionary trade-offs and how loon species are on the edge of becoming fish and birds. This links up with our Design Challenge, which includes a fun Loon Survival Game exercise. Overall, it was a memorable experience, and a great way to end my experience as a Global Pathway Scholar at AHS.
