Classes
For all four years of High School, I've taken a Spanish language class including AP Spanish during my junior year. My exposure to Spanish language and culture has fostered an interest in the issues that face Latin America and how those issues impact our lives today. In addition to my study of Spanish, I took both World History (grade 9) and the Modern World (grade 10) which covered significant topics in world history from a global lens.
Grade 10: Spanish Language and Culture. In this course, we learned about the traditions and culture of Spanish-speaking countries with a focus on Latin America. Topics included the reasons behind, and impact of, immigration.
Grade 11: AP Spanish Language and Culture: A continuation of my coursework from grade 10, we explored the intersection of language and culture in Latin America in greater detail including a discussion of how the Spanish language has evolved in Latin America. We took a field trip to Lawrence to discuss the impact of immigration on the city and its culture.
Grade 12: Latin American Cinema: Coursework focused on the history and evolution of Latin American film with a focus on political commentary and Latin American culture and norms. Representative films included: No (a Chilean film about the campaign against Pinochet) and Voces Inocentes (an exploration of the Salvadoran civil war).
