After almost 6 months of preparation, training, and diligence, the Niskayuna Frisbee Club is putting their eyes on the prize. With a recent attendance record of 35 frisbee participants on March 18th, morale is high and there is a team spirit shared between the players every practice. Each player enjoys themself but also makes sure their throws are as good as they can be, giving encouragement everywhere they go. It’s an environment that would make anyone want to stay and come back the next time. With friendly games and tournaments arriving soon in April and States following right after, the club will need to make sure that its players are well conditioned and prepared.
It’s important to note as well that Frisbee goes beyond the strained competitiveness of an “ordinary” sport. First, it’s a no contact sport and players are responsible for calling their own fouls. Self-officiating promotes the athletes to be more accountable as well as allowing them to resolve their own disputes. Second, Frisbee is a game that includes everyone — whether you’re a vigorous athlete or a more relaxed type of person, as long as you can move your arms and legs, you can play Frisbee! Once you get accustomed to the simple rules, learning the various throws can be tedious but as with almost everything, practice makes perfect. Last but certainly not least, we have the “spirit of the game”, basically the foundation of everything in frisbee. While competitiveness is encouraged, it should never sacrifice the commitment to rules, the esteem players hold for each other, and, most importantly, the fun of playing. With spirit captains at the helm, whenever teams face each other, they show their spirit by usually giving meaningful gifts like a signed frisbee or some note cards. This unique and distinct aspect of the game that is found in no other, and makes Frisbee stand out and even more special. Frisbee embodies the theme that it is not all about winning or being competitive, but instead, focusing on the joy is what matters.
Look out for the April edition of The Warrior to catch updated news on the club! Practices are usually every Tuesday and Friday from 6-8pm with Ms. Lee as the coach and club advisor. Captains Dan Kwon and Eileen Cho plan to schedule games most Fridays in the upcoming weeks until States.
