During the week of December 20th, Drama Club held their first show of the school year. Despite Covid restrictions, the club co-presidents and members were able to pull off a wonderful performance, consisting of four skits and some interactive acting games with the audience.
Each skit was written and acted out by the amazing club members who rehearsed every Wednesday afternoon to ensure that the show would run smoothly. To accommodate social distancing rules and other Covid mandates, members of the audience were required to make reservations before the show, and masks were required.
The following is an interview with senior Kaitlyn Pack, one of the co-presidents of Drama Club. She shares her thoughts about the first production:
Kristal Lin: What did you think of the first show?
Kaitlyn Pack: I am very pleased with the way the show turned out! It was so good to be back to performing onstage. All the scenes were great and I am so proud of all the work that the actors put into them. I was honestly pretty worried a few weeks before, but it was great to see people step up and start taking it really seriously. I enjoyed watching the scenes develop and seeing everyone's amazing creativity! I could see places where we could have improved, but overall I think it was a really great experience for myself as a new director and for the actors, especially those for whom this was their first performance. I liked watching the actors grow more comfortable onstage and I was very happy that so many of them volunteered for the improv games and showed that they enjoyed performing and wanted to learn more. I am so excited for them to develop those skills more!
KL: What are some of the obstacles that you had to overcome while organizing and planning for the show?
KP: Planning the show was hard, but absolutely worth it. Mathena and I had to learn the process very quickly. There were things that nobody had ever told us and we had to improvise to make them happen. It was very exciting to have a lot of people interested in performing scenes but it was hard to get a lot done during rehearsals. We suggested meeting outside of rehearsal, but not very many groups took advantage of this. Eventually, we had to make the decision that we would cut scenes that weren't well developed enough to be put into a show. We saw groups step up and work really hard to make their skits show-worthy. It was very valuable for me to be able to meet with a few groups outside of rehearsal. It was great to have the time to really work at a scene and I got to see a lot of amazing improvement. We were lucky to have someone volunteer to help on lights and during the dress rehearsal I could really see the show coming together!
KL: When will the next show be?
KP: I have gotten a lot of questions about the next show and I am glad everybody is so excited for it! Our plan is to have a formal play in the spring, but we don't know dates yet or what exact play we will be doing. Auditions for the spring play have traditionally started around March. There will be a big announcement when we have that all figured out! For now, rehearsals will be less structured and we will be working on developing acting skills in improv, building scenes, acting out a script, etc.
All four skits were written and produced by students for the show.
