The National Children's Choir

The National Children’s Choir is a school-based choral experience for primary school children. Affiliated pupils from 4th, 5th or 6th classes in Irish Primary Schools learn a common repertoire of songs. The children are challenged to perform a broad range of songs from Bach to the Beatles. They learn the songs in their own schools, taught by their own teachers, and join with other local schools three times a year to rehearse with Assistant Musical director, Kathy Quinn. Our school has participated in this uplifting event in 2015, 2017 and 2019, where choirs of approximately 500 children have performed to large audiences in the Royal Theatre and Breaffy Arena. A number of pupils from our school have also taken part in the national concert performance which brings together children from each of the regional concerts to perform the repertoire in the National Concert Hall, Dublin.

Music Generation Mayo

We have joined forces with Music Generation Mayo for a number of projects. In 2015/2016 we were the pilot school for the Céilí Ukulele project run by Music Generation Mayo. Having become a major success, the project has been extended to in excess of 11 schools in the county. Our tutor, Jamie Mulrooney has led our senior classes in learning a repertoire of contemporary songs on the instrument and we have performed at our own in-house concerts and also at the official launch of the new ETB building in Castlebar, when it was opened by then Taoiseach, Enda Kenny.

We also worked with Music Generation Mayo and the Linenhall Hall Arts Centre in 2015/2016 on the Punkit percussion project. A video of our final performance and photos from the day are included below.
