What a sensational fortnight it has been at Stonefields School as our learners continue to live out our core value of bringing our best together! A massive highlight was last week's Book Week, where the creative energy of our vibrant dress-up parade was matched only by our collective determination; together we read a whopping total of 6,589 books during the Whakamana Rock Reading challenge.
Our learning extended well beyond the classroom walls too, with rich, hands-on trips to MOTAT and the Botanical Gardens for our junior learners. For senior learners coming up next week, there is an opportunity to discover their unique passions and practice determination as they audition for a lead role in the School Show.
On Wednesday next week, we have the much-anticipated opening of Te Whare Mīharo, our new outdoor classroom and home to our nature school and loose-parts play. All learners will get to experience this space throughout the day and see the wonder of play. We can't wait to see everyone enjoying this space.
What a joyous Book Week we have just had! We had two wonderful authors who shared their enthusiasm for stories and books with us. Stacy Gregg inspired the Year 0-4 learners with some of the adventures she’s had while writing her books, and David Riley reminded us about how important it is to read so that we can follow our dreams. He challenged all of us to read two books every week - can we keep that up?
The Book Fair raised nearly $2900 for the school library and put many books into the hands and hearts of learners. Thanks to the FOSS team for supporting us in running the fair.
On Friday we paraded, danced and celebrated some of our favourite books and characters - what a joyful acknowledgment of the richness of children’s literature and the connections we make with stories and information. The learners and staff looked amazing, and special guest Dog Man was there to celebrate with us as well.
And finally, a big congratulations to Reti, the winners of the Whakamana Rocks Reading Challenge! Thanks to all the readers across all the rocks and to all the family members who supported this reading. We collaboratively read a whopping total of 6,589 books! That is impressive.
Thank you to our community for coming together and supporting our celebration of books and reading during Book Week.
We are absolutely thrilled to invite you to join us for the official opening of our new outdoor classroom - Te Whare Mīharo, on Wednesday 24 June.
This purpose-built space is designed to be the vibrant heart of our Nature School, loose-parts play, and countless outdoor learning adventures, from building huts and nurturing deep creativity to gathering around the fire pit to toast marshmallows. Read more in our recent email.
Today Year 3's learners had a fun-filled day at MOTAT designing, prototyping, and exploring simple machines as part of their Term 2 learning focus on Engineering and Community. Learners got to see firsthand how the design process can be applied to engineer mechanisms, and how collaborative effort allows a team and a community to thrive. Year 4's will have this opportunity tomorrow.
Earlier this week, you would have received an email from us regarding your child's Mid-Year Report. We wanted to make you aware that the Ministry of Education has introduced new reporting requirements that align with the refreshed New Zealand Curriculum. Your child's Mid-Year Report will be based on these new reporting requirements and will therefore look slightly different to previous years.
The main difference is the introduction of new Progress Descriptors to communicate where your child is achieving at the mid-year point, in relation to their current year level. Please see our detailed email for more information.
We will share more details on the report structure in the coming weeks.
After a rain delay, our Year 0-1's finally got their visit to the Botanical Gardens as they explored what makes a community thrive and discovered the wonders of nature.
We are thrilled to announce that auditions for this year’s highly anticipated (as yet to be named) school production are now open. We are looking for a group of learners to form the core cast. The school will be divided into Cast A and Cast B, and there are 12 core cast roles available for learners in Years 5–8. Please see your hub teachers to get a sample script. Auditions will be held next week.
Every single learner will have the opportunity to perform on stage during next term's School Show. Look out for more details and how to get involved next term.
Unfortunately, our school has been the subject of an increasing number of vandalism incidents recently, largely caused by electric scooters and bikes. Damage has been caused all across the school including holes being burnt in the playground matting and turf, and burn marks on concrete.
We need your help! We love that our school is open and available for the whole community to use outside of school hours. It would be a very sad day if we had to take this away and lock our gates. We ask that we bring our best together as a community, and if you are on school grounds outside our hours, please continue to live our school values and Treasure Our Things.
If you notice any damage being caused, please Speak Up, Stand Up. Don't be an innocent bystander.
Due to the damage being caused and the number of safety incidents recently, we have made the decision to ban all electric scooters and bikes from school grounds.
If your child uses an electric scooter or bike to get to school, these must be parked in the bike racks outside of school grounds. Please contact us if your child has no other way of getting to school and we will arrange for a Kawa of Care to be signed.
Under no circumstances can electric scooters or electric bikes be brought inside the school gates.
There is always plenty of sporting action happening around the school! This week, we enjoyed some exciting FIFA action, watching the New Zealand vs Iran match from Te Pou Manawa. Our Ki-o-Rahi teams have been training hard as they prepare for the Tāmaki Cluster competition next week, while AIMS, Gymnastics, Basketball, Hockey, and Volleyball sessions continue to run well. It’s been great to see the effort, teamwork, and enthusiasm across all sports.
We are proud of the enthusiasm our learners continue to show. Whether competing, training, or supporting others, they all contribute to the positive sporting culture here at Stonefields School. Here are some highlights from the past week...Ka mau te wehi! Kia kaha tonu!
