We are delighted to welcome our new ākonga (learners) and their whānau to Hub 1SM and Samantha Meehan-Harris, who will be their guardian teacher. It's wonderful to have you join the Junior Team and the wider Stonefields School community. A big welcome back to all our returning learners and whānau, we are excited for another learning rich term ahead!
The term has started with off with exploration, curiosity and an incredible amount of excitement as we launched our concept 'He Hauora te Taonga - Health is Wealth'. On Tuesday, we were fortunate to welcome the Police Eagle Helicopter, flown in by Newman Subritzky (Hugo and Ruben's father). We also welcomed the police, the police dog handlers and their disciplined police dogs. The learners were in awe of the helicopter and the police dogs, and have been very motivated to talk and write about this special experience. Some have shared that they would like to have a career as a helicopter pilot or a police helicopter pilot!
On Thursday afternoon, our learners were immersed in a variety of sporting, and health and wellbeing experiences like soccer, hockey, boxing, karate, jiu-jitsu, yoga, nutrition, physical challenges and much more. Our learners worked alongside their Year 7-8 buddies through a rotation of five activities each related to the key dimensions of Te Whare Tapa Whā:
Taha wairua - spiritual
Taha hinengaro - mental & emotional
Taha tinana - physical
Taha whānau - family & social
Whenua - land, roots
The excitement continues next week with our Stepping Stone to Camp evening on Thursday, 8 May from 4-6pm at school. The children will get to experience a few outdoor/nature-related activities with you. Please remember that you will need to accompany and support your child during this event. This event is not suitable for older or younger siblings.
Stepping Stone to Camp evening will go ahead rain or shine. If the weather is unsuitable, we will do the activities indoors. See you then.

Kia Ora,
My name is Samantha Meehan Harris and I joined Stonefields School this term. I have been working in early childhood for just under 20 years and I am looking forward to joining our newest group of new entrants as they start their journey at school.
When I am not teaching, I enjoy travelling and exploring the world including our own beautiful country. I look forward to getting to know you.
This term, we are offering two parent workshops as follows:
In this workshop, we will cover the aspects of structured literacy including the teaching sequence, how you can help at home, and we will have time for questions. This workshop will be very beneficial for you if your child is new to school.
Facilitated by: Hub teachers
When: Tuesday 13 May, 3.15 - 4pm (we will provide some afternoon tea and care for your child while you attend the workshop)
Where: Hub 1
Get familiar with SchoolTalk features to stay connected and informed about your child's learning. We will also look at how the new curriculum sits in SchoolTalk and how to navigate to the new learning progressions.
Facilitated by: Sarah Holden (SchoolTalk lead teacher)
When: Tuesday 10 June, 3.15pm - 4pm
Where: Te Pātaka Ako | Community Hub
After our immersion day yesterday, our learners are eager to start exploring the concept of He Hauora te Taonga - Health is Wealth. We will dive deep into Physical Health (including getting extra active!), Mental and Emotional Health (learning about feelings), and Developing Healthy Habits (how we sustain our health). Once again we are welcoming the opportunity for our learners to collaborate with other learners and teachers from within the Junior Village.
If you have experience in any area of health and wellbeing, we would love for you to share your knowledge with our learners. Please come and talk to us.
Learner-Led Conferences will be held on Thursday 29 May for all Year 1-6 learners. Your child and their teacher will share your child's learning, celebrate successes and share the next steps with you. There will be a selection of hands-on activities for your child to lead you through, and learning displays around the hub for your child to share with you. Booking information for the Learner-Led Conferences will be sent out closer to the time. Please note school will close at 1pm on this day for Year 0-6.
At the end of this term, the Year 1-2 learners will receive a written report with a snapshot of your child's achievement. You can also use SchoolTalk at any time to see your child's learning and next steps.
For those children in Hub 1SM, as your child's learning journey is just starting with us, Whaea Sam will reach out and connect with you in weeks 5-6 regarding your child's progress to date.
All learners will be requested to bring a non-perishable item to school, in return for wearing mufti on Tuesday 6 May. FOSS will then use these items to create hampers. These hampers will then be raffled off with the proceeds going toward the natural pathway.
There will be a box in each Hub on Tuesday to drop your donated items into. Items could include:
Non perishable food such as sweets, chocolates, chips, crackers …
Books
Toys
Stationery
Anything you’d like to win in a hamper!
This fundraiser is the same concept as we did for the Sports Shed last year. Next week all learners will be given a sheet containing four raffle tickets ($5 each) to sell. Prizes will be awarded to the family/child who sells the most tickets.
At Stonefields School we wear our uniform with pride. As the weather cools down, our winter uniform items will keep you warm. We appreciate your support in ensuring your child is wearing the correct school uniform:
Blue polo shirt (short sleeve or long sleeve)
Charcoal trousers, skort, or shorts
Black shoes, including black laces (white soles are acceptable).
Black or white socks
Beanie
Fleece Jacket
Black or dark blue plain hair ties/bands (no other colours please)
Black tights/leggings and a black long sleeve thermal can be worn under the uniform for extra warmth if required
No jewellery or necklaces should be worn, as this is a health and safety concern during playtimes and PE sessions. Exceptions to this include jewellery of cultural significance, small stud earrings, and watches however no smart-watches.
New uniform items can be purchased online and delivered to your home. Pre-Loved uniform items can be requested here and collected from the office.
This term we have three Junior Assemblies. This is a great opportunity for parents to see everything we've been exploring and learning about in the Hubs. We hope you can join us at 2 pm in the Hall on:
Monday 12 May
Monday 9 June
Monday 23 June
Scholastic Book Club orders for issue no.3 2025 are now open. If you wish to make a purchase, please do so before orders close next Friday 9 May.
The ordering process is completely paper-less, and the current brochure is available to view here. There will be some paper copies of the Book Club catalogue in each of the hubs and the library, should you prefer to view the catalogue in paper form.
To place your order, please register using the LOOP website. You may then order via the website, or by using one of Scholastic's apps. Please select your child's hub (class), not their year level when placing your order. Please do not return anything to school as all orders are processed through the Scholastic LOOP system. You will be emailed when your order arrives.
If you have any problems placing your order, please email anna.malan@stonefields.school.nz or phone Scholastic on 0800 266 525.
Last term Photolife captured individual portraits, hub photos and sibling photos (if requested). These are now available for you to order. You will have received an email from Photolife during the holidays with your keycode. Please go to the Photolife website, enter your keycode, and select the photos you'd like to purchase. Orders placed before Sunday 11 May will be delivered to school for free.
If you haven't received your keycode from Photolife, please contact the office.
Our children love their library visits. All Year 0-2 hubs will visit the library weekly and during this time the children will have an opportunity to browse, borrow a book, listen to stories, and learn some library skills. To avoid disappointment, please remind your child to bring their library book to school on their library day so they can return it and borrow a new book each week. Our library days are as follows:
Hub 10: Mondays after morning tea
Hub 1: Mondays after lunch
Hub 2: Tuesdays after lunch
This term, while the Year 0-2 children learn about taking responsibility for their library books, they will only be allowed to borrow one book at a time. Many children also enjoy visiting the library during their break times and they can return their book and borrow a new book at these times too.
This year, the library will be open before and after school if you would like to visit it with your child.
A gentle reminder that children should not bring toys, game cards or other precious belongings from home. These items are distracting in the hub and often there are tears when a child misplaces their precious items. Please take a moment to remind your child about keeping their toys etc at home.
Don't forget to keep an eye on the lost property outside Te Pataka Ako! The rack is bulging with named jackets and the pile of unnamed jackets is even bigger.
