The following are preliminary findings from our survey. The survey continues to collect responses, and complete results will be compiled and analyzed by the Center for Interdisciplinary Research at St. Olaf in the Fall of 2021.
A majority of participants had a high interest in learning music by composers of color, most had conducted research on the subject, and most had performed music by composers of color. However, we see an even split between participants who had received specialized instruction when performing this music and the ones who had not.
All participants feel either highly or moderately comfortable with individuals from all races and ethnicities performing music by composers of color. Most participants also think that race and ethnicity have some contribution to the authenticity of a piece composed by a person of color.
