After spending some time with our data, we've identified two apparent barriers to diversifying the American art song canon. One is the lack of music accessibility at higher education institutions, and the other is concerns of cultural appropriation among white students, teachers, and performers. For these reasons, we are including lists of resources, particularly books, databases, names of composers of color, and journal articles that have been helpful for us, as well as Randye Jones's guide to performing this music in a respectful, knowledgeable way. It is important to note that most of these resources were shared with us by Dr. Louise Toppin, Director of the Singing Down the Barriers Institute at the University of Michigan.
