Science

The children have been enjoying updating their bean booklets as they observe their beans and how they are growing!
These bean plants have now been sent home - please encourage your children to water them and watch them as they grow. The children have learnt all about the different things a plant needs to survive, such as water, space, air and sun!

This term the children are observing different plants and trees. We visited the school garden and the children took photos of all the different plants they could find and then planted their own bean in a pot to observe over the coming weeks.
We will be looking at describing the basic structure of common flowering plants.

We have been looking at our senses today and carried out a mini experiment. We used our senses to work out what we could see, hear, smell, taste and touch.

We have started our new topic in science today. We are going to be learning about our bodies! We will be teaching some of our science through our English lessons as well by linking it to non-fiction texts. Today, we have looked at our 5 senses. We have discussed what they are, and what they do. Can the children name them to you at home? Can they tell you what body part is used for each sense too?

This term in Science, we have been looking at weather. This has linked nicely with our Geography of looking at extreme weathers in hot and cold countries. In science, we have looked at the different weathers we would have in each season and looked at what months come into the seasons. We have studied and recorded a weather chart and taken data from this to work out what was the coldest day of the week, what weather was the most common and which was our favourite day. Heres a sneak peak of your calendars which will be making their way to you by the end of the week too!

We investigated which material would make the best umbrella. We tested cardboard, paper, cotton fabric and plastic. To test this, we had a brave volunteer sit under the different materials while water was poured over!

We concluded that plastic made the best material as it is waterproof.

In science we are learning all about different materials and their properties. Today we went on a materials hunt to see which diffrent materials we could find around school. Have a look at home, which materials can you find?  (glass, metal, wood, paper, plastic, fabric)
