Trip Leaders

Sara Marks will also be joining the course. She was the co-traveler for the Jan Term course, Endangered Australia: Native Wildlife and Culture in 2019 and 2020, and has extensive volunteering experience with both domestic animal and wildlife organizations in the United States and Australia. For over 20 years she has worked with various non-profit animal-based organizations to help them achieve their goals. She lived in Australia and is familiar with Australian culture and many of the organizations we plan to work with and visit.

Professor Derek Marks is a faculty member in the Kinesiology Department at Saint Mary’s. His wildlife and ecological conservation background is rooted in over 30 years of volunteer work and about 15 years of teaching conservation-related classes for Saint Mary’s Jan Term in Yosemite, Australia, and in the Bay Area.

For 15 of the past 17 years at Saint Mary’s College he has taught or co-taught travel courses including: The Yosemite Experience, Bay Area Trailblazers, and Endangered Australia – Wildlife and Culture. All of these courses aimed to gain an appreciation of our role in helping preserve and appreciate the natural resources we have in our own ‘backyard’ and abroad.

In Australia, he has developed strong relationships with both wildlife conservation programs and professionals, as well as Aboriginal communities and leaders who are able to share their experiences and backgrounds with our students and travelers.
