Recommendations for Practice at Home
- Use scissors to cut old newspaper over a trash can.
- Rip open boxes, envelopes, and paper. (This is a fine motor skill.)
- Play with Play-doh or help mom cook/bake cookies. (It is a bit messy but what they walk away with is self confidence and improved fine motor skills.)
- Flash cards (uppercase letters, lower case letters, colors, shapes and numbers)
- Practice their full name, parent’s names, date of birth, address and phone number. (This is easy to do in the car to and from school)
- Manners! Please, thank you, yes/no ma’am, yes/no sir, excuse me, and being patient.
- Gluing with a bottle of glue-we use these all the time in school. They are messy but clean up easily with water and are a great science and fine motor manipulative.
- Play games! [Candy Land (colors), Chutes and Ladders (numbers), Memory (recognitions), and puzzles (math)]. If you do not have a lot of time, many of these games are available in app form, but playing with them teaches them to take turns and socialize.
- Reading to your child - it is invaluable. It increases vocabulary and a love of reading which will only continue to benefit them. In addition, it is some wonderful time with YOU!
