Our Mission

Eye of the Storm is an Upper School student-run club that creates videos and podcasts about life at St. Luke’s School. EOTS members engage with the St. Luke’s community by interviewing students and faculty and filming at school events. The club is an opportunity to learn about everything from videography to editing to speaking in front of a camera. In the long term, EOTS hopes to give media studies and journalism a greater presence on the Hilltop and someday expand to a live broadcast program.

Our Story

Eye of the Storm was founded by Elyse Kim '21 in fall 2018. Under the guidance of Academic Technologist Eli Fendelman, EOTS quickly expanded during its first year and produced 11 original videos. Most notably, the 2018-2019 school year featured varsity sports previews and series like “Back Home on the Hilltop” and Vogue-inspired “37 Questions.”

Multiple exciting developments accompanied the 2019 school year. First, the club launched “The Thunderclap,” a podcast which features commentary on school news and interviews with students and teachers. Through the podcast, EOTS has partnered with WSLX, SLS’s radio station: WSLX airs “The Thunderclap” twenty minutes before every hour. Finally, with the notable contributions of Brian Douglas '21, Doron Loewenberg '21, and Zachary Amendola '21, EOTS launched this website to house projects and behind-the-scenes pictures.

Fall 2020 was a milestone for Eye of the Storm, as membership grew to over 60 students and producers Brian Douglas '21 and Elyse Kim '21 collaborated on a virtual tour video for the school. Though faced with challenges as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, EOTS members continued to embrace opportunities to grow as editors, videographers, and interviewers.

With heavy hearts, Eye of the Storm watched Elyse Kim and Bryan Douglas graduate from St. Luke’s in the spring of 2021. We will miss them dearly as their legacy continues on in our foundation and growth as a club. When school resumed, a few months later, Catherine Clark ‘22, Olivia Lee ‘24 and Michael Luther ‘24, stepped into the roles of the club’s leaders. As we continue to work with the new developments of COVID-19, Eye of the Storm looks forward to releasing new videos and podcasts to our community and beyond.

Since the club's creation, EOTS members have strived to improve every stage of production, from filming quality to editing style. Here is the development from Episode #1 to Episode #15.

Our Partnerships

2018 saw the creation of partnerships between EOTS and two other SLS departments, as club members collaborated with the World Language and Alumni departments to produce original content.

Three new collaborations accompanied the 2019-2020 school year. EOTS worked with the Admissions team to produce two videos about the Middle School and Upper School Open Houses, and also created a promotional video for the Honor Council. Finally, students in Mr. Valera's Digital Music Production class contributed original music for use in Eye of the Storm episodes and podcasts.

During the 2020-21 school year, EOTS members produced, filmed, and edited a virtual tour video in collaboration with the Admissions team.
