Each year, the senior class takes off on the annual retreat to Bear Butte, a cherished tradition for each student that comes through. This retreat is an annual opportunity for prayer, reflection, and class camraderie. It is a week where students can take the time to reflect on their relationship with the Creator, others, themselves, and the nature around them. The week blends both aspects of the school's identity, our Catholic faith and Native American culture/spirituality.
Every level of the community comes together to support the seniors on their journey. Elders in the community put on sweats, give talks, and prayerfully lead other ceremonies. The department of Mission and Ministry puts together a schedule of events that consist of a prayer walk, mass and stops at cultural sites such as Crazy Horse Memorial and Devil's Tower. Families, staff, and benefactors send prayers and write notes of support. The senior class supports each other in their vulnerability as they gather in prayer, emmaus walks, and family dinners.
When asked what they were going to take away from their retreat experience, one senior said “Confidence, in myself and my class. I know how resilient we are” Another said “I’m going to take more time to pray for myself and my classmates because now I know what they are going through.”
