Know Your Value 5-8
Know Your Value 5-8
Learning Intention:
Students will learn that taking care of ourselves is part of the call to holiness.
Engaging Question: How should we take care of our bodies?
Message: God created each person individually, because he loves each person so much. God created people different from the rest of creation—we have both bodies and souls. We cannot see our souls, but we know they are there because they are the part of us that talks with God. Our bodies can honor God. Since God created our bodies, He wants us to use them well to serve him. That means eating healthy, getting plenty of exercise, making sure we have a good night’s sleep, and talking to others when we feel sad or angry.

What are you doing?
Let's Talk About It!
Matthew Kelly told a story of his childhood feud with his brother, Andrew.
What did Andrew do to make Matthew angry?
How did Matthew respond?
Was his response appropriate? Why or why not?
Why did Matthew’s mother’s reaction make such an impression on him?
Has anyone ever asked you “what are you doing?” at a time when you were doing something you shouldn’t have been?
Why is it important to make good choices?
Activity #1: Snap Decisions
Explain that they are going to play a game to prompt their thinking about making decisions.
The "ball/object" is going to get tossed around the group. The student who catches the ball must quickly answer that is asked, and then pass the back. They can not hold on to the ball. The question must be answered by the time the ball gets back to you.
Begin passing the ball and asking simple questions, then increase the questions in difficulty.
Example Questions:
On which wrist would you wear a watch or a bracelet?
Did you choose to wear white, black, or colored socks today?
What will you do after school today?
What are you eating for lunch today?
What time do you normally go to bed?
How did you get to school today?
If you were going to see a movie tonight, what movie would you see?
You have to finish reading a book by next Monday. When will you do it?
You have a project due tomorrow in class, but your phone keeps buzzing. Do you answer it?
If you found money by your locker, would you keep it and not tell anyone, or would you try to find out who dropped it?
It's your turn to do the dishes, but you really want to go to a friends house. Do you do the dishes first?
You and your sibling are arguing over what to watch on TV. Do you let your sibling choose?
Your parents set specific rules about screen time, but you really want to talk to your best friend for 5 more minutes, do you break the rules because it's only 5 minutes?
You are chosen to work with a classmate you don't get along with very well. Do you ask for a new partner?
If you were put in charge of a committee for an event at school, what skills do you have to make the event successful?
Your teacher is giving you 45 minutes of study hall to catch up on work. You have a lot of work to do, but your friends are all chatting. Do you do your work or save it for later?
Have a discussion with the students about the varying degrees of difficulty in making decisions. Discuss why some questions seem easy and other questions seem more challenging.
Closing Prayer
In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit
Heavenly Father,
You created each and every person who is alive today and who has ever lived. Everyone of us is created because You love us. Help us to appreciate Your gift of life. Help us to always respect our bodies and our lives as gifts from YOU. Let our eyes see the beauty of the world You created. Let our minds understand the great mysteries of creation. Let our hearts feel the love You have for each of us and share that love with others.
Amen.
