Caring for those in Need Lesson K-4
Caring for those in Need Lesson K-4
Learning Intention:
Students will be encouraged to explore the meaning of poverty here in the United States as well as around the world.
o What does poverty look like?
o Why is help for the poor central to Jesus’ message.
Engaging Question: Do we help those in need?
Let's Talk About It!
Message: Jesus has great love for the poor. He means not only people who don't have anything to eat but also people who are lonely (poor in spirit.) Jesus wants to help each of us, and he wants us to help each other.
Jesus loves each and everyone of us.
Activity 1: M&M Activity
Give each student a small bowl.
Fill each students bowl with M&M's, giving each student a different amount.
Have students explore their M&M's.
Discuss
How many M&M's do you have?
How does this make you feel?
Explain to the students how this represents a great disparity of resources in our classrooms, our town, and our country.
What can you do to help other children enjoy their treat?
Does it matter what was "yours"?
Should everyone have the same? or should we share?
Message: Jesus took the small donation of the young boy and multiplied it. He can do the same with our small gestures of kindness and mercy.
Sharing your candy, shares your item, but also shares KINDNESS and FRIENDSHIP.
Closing Prayer
In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit
Heavenly Father,
You have given us so many good things.
You have given us our family, our friends, our home, our school, good food, and nice clothes.
We pray for our brothers and sisters who do not have these things.
Help us to love them and to find ways to help and serve them. Amen
