C - 6th Easter

Christ's Promise

We looked ahead to the Sixth Sunday of Easter this week and Jesus’ promise, “I am going away and shall return.” We explored with the children the power of promises this week: we all have the power to make them and, in doing so, we have the power to influence the faith that other people have in us.

Equally, if we can learn to understand and trust in Christ’s promise, we can use that depth of faith to help us weather the highs and lows of our earthly lives, in the sure hope that we will see Him face to face.

We also used this week to think about the promises we make as a world - our commitment to Children's Rights - and how we can help Ukrainian refugees access those rights now. See below for more details...

School is Cool

Mrs Hojak, one of our talented Midday Supervisors, has championed a week of activities to help us all consider the needs of Ukrainian refugees. She has identified that children now attending school in countries across Europe are missing the essential stationery and school resources needed to access education effectively. She helped us to learn more about Ukrainian culture including writing in Cyrillic, making motanka dolls, baking gingerbread and sowing sunflowers. She also helped us think about meaningful ways to raise funds to buy the school stationery that so many refugees need. The total count came in at just over £850! - An excellent result for a very worthy cause. Thank you to everyone who was involved.

Fiery Research in Year 2

This week, Year 2 have been finding out all about the Great Fire of London. BUT they were challenged to find the information themselves, using different sources. The buzz in the room was great as the children explored websites, videos, pictures, books and stories...by the end of the lesson, they were all full of knowledge, ready to share with others. We definitely have some historians in the making!

Exciting Science!

This week in Science, Year 3 have been learning about water transportation in plants. The children have discovered how water is transported around a plant and then evaporates through the leaves, causing it to draw more water up to its stem from the roots.

We watched this process in action using a simple set of resources (clear cups, water, food colouring, kitchen towel) and predicted which paper stem would carry the water to its end the quickest. Miss Moore’s Class were amazed atwhat happened overnight when the colours met!

Can you guess what happened?

Take care of your teeth!

In Science this week, Year 4 was looking at the impact of sugary food and drinks on our teeth. We had left eggshells in a cup of orange juice, milk, water, Pepsi, sugar free 7UP and Ribena for a week. On Tuesday 17th May, we unveiled the results of what happened. Can you tell what they looked like by some of the facial expressions?

Promise to return

In Witness Worship this week, Mrs Baston led the way with her witness - Ernest Shackleton. She amazed us with stories about his adventures across Antarctica and his promise to his team, "We will return." Ernest was totally devoted to his love of exploration but he also understood the importance of keeping his promises to his team. Their confidence and faith in him spurred them on.

You'll find some incredible photographic records of Shackleton's exploration on Mrs Baston's worship slides. They really do tell the story beautifully!

Underwater Computing

Year One have enjoyed a computing day this week. The children created the setting and characters from the book ‘The Rainbow Fish’. The children were able to use different brushstrokes and colours to create the wonderfully vibrant fish. They then added text to their pictures. Check out their awesome work!

Super Shopping!

This week Reception have been busy planning their own superhero party. They wrote shopping lists of things we will need, and of course we needed party food!

The children are in charge, so a trip to the Co-Op was needed. Shopping lists in hand, the children walked to the shop, collected their food items and then paid for them using coins. It was a wonderful life experience, seeing money in action, how shopkeepers use tills and, on our walk, we even saw a postal worker. Maybe he was posting invitations to our party!

Watch this space, there will be 90 mini superheroes around school on Friday!

Little Treasures in Year 6

This week in Year 6 it's been DT week and we've been making treasure boxes. We followed the DT principles and began by looking at the User, Purpose, Functionality and Design Principles. We used the prototype phase to help us innovate, experimenting with size, shape and structure. The manufacturing process involved accurate measuring, precision sawing and creative design. We made sure that our final products were authentic and fit for purpose. We had so much fun and we are delighted with the results. In the words of Alex, from 6P: "I still can't believe that 4 wooden sticks could become a box like this - it's amazing!!"

Super Cool Nursery!

Following on from the children’s interest and our role play ice cream shop, Ladybird class have made their own ice cream and lollies. We had great fun mixing yoghurt and fruit together, before scooping the mixture into pots and placing sticks in the middle. After leaving them in the freezer overnight, the children then enjoyed them in a picnic style snack time. They were delicious!

Precision Drawing

This week, Year 5 have been learning all about Vector Drawing in computing. We learnt how to use Google Draw to create layered pictures just from basic shapes. All the children had a great time and their final piece of work was to create new classroom labels. We were very impressed with the final outcomes!

A Bright Bunch!

It's become a rite of passage - the Year 6 leavers' hoodies arrived this week. They're such a bright bunch.

Keeping their promises

Our heartfelt thanks to St Helena's Class for leading a beautiful worship this morning. They began by giving us a promise voucher: You Will Enjoy Our Assembly. And they didn't let us down! We were treated to a beautiful arrangement of song, story, prayer and praise that helped us to understand the power of promises. When we make and keep a promise, we reveal to others that they can trust us and put their faith in us. In the same way, we learn to understand God's promise to us and to trust in Him.

Well done also to our many Witness Award winners who have excelled in keep their promises this week!
