Breakfast with Christ

In Worship this week, we’re looking ahead to the 3rd Sunday of Easter. As the disciples come to terms with the unbelievable events of Holy Week and Jesus’ subsequent appearances, they decide to go fishing! Echoing events from a much earlier Gospel story, Jesus appears on the shore, encouraging the catch-less crew to try casting their nets on the other side of the boat. As they struggle with their enormous haul, Peter realises it is Jesus watching them from the beach.

On coming ashore, they find that Jesus has prepared breakfast for them. He invites them to eat and, over a fisher finger sandwich, they continue to learn more about each other. In the same way, spending time sharing a meal, enjoying good conversation and growing in relationship is one of the most commonplace yet special acts we can engage in each day. This week we have explored the importance of sharing meals together and making room for Christ at the table.

Netball Superstars!

Many congratulations to our Year 5 & 6 Netball Teams who represented St Joseph's at the annual Guildford School's Netball Tournament last Saturday. Both teams played with exceptional spirit and resilience. Year 6 ended the tournament in 5th place and Year 5 were ranked joint 1st with Queen Eleanor's School!

Roman Numerals

We travelled back in time in Year 4 today, imagining we were Roman children learning Maths. We were learning one of the earliest forms of recording numbers, but experimented forming them with eco-friendly straws. We compared our Arabic number system with the Roman one to find similarities and differences.

Year 3 Defeat the Minotaur!

In Year 3 our English work is focusing on the Greek Myth - Theseus and the Minotaur. On Monday, the children had the wonderful opportunity to experience a maze in the hope of defeating the Minotaur. Children guided their blindfolded partners through the maze and read clues stating how close they were to the Minotaur, for example, 'you swipe at the Minotaur's face and blind him', 'you push the Minotaur into a wall, dazing and confusing him', 'the Minotaur blocks your path. Fortunately everyone found their way to the end of the maze and were delighted to discover they had defeated the Minotaur! Well done brave Year 3 children!

Sharing a meal

Miss Cook & Miss Malli took the lead in this week's Witness Worship, sharing with us some amazing insights into the world of the Sikh langar - a community kitchen where donations of food are prepared and served to anyone who visits the gurdwara. Miss Malli explained that, in the Sikh faith, equality is an important value and so everyone and anyone may enjoy a meal at the langar and all those attending sit together (on the floor) to symbolise their equality.

There were so many links and similarities to the meals that Jesus shared with his followers, using simple ingredients and sharing them generously so that all can be invited to partake. It was a truly inspiring worship.

Year 2's Puppets!

This week in DT, Year 2 have been learning all about puppets. We had a video message from Reception saying that they love to read but sometimes they enjoy a puppet shows too. We were put to the challenge of creating our own puppets (and puppet shows). Everyone even managed to sew their own puppets together!

Year 5 Adventures

WOW! What a wonderful few days away! A rather weary, tired but happy Year 5 returned to school on Wednesday evening from their residential to the IOW. Not only did they have fun, but they developed so many skills and learnt so much about themselves and each other. From the determination to climb to the top of Jacob’s ladder, to being out of their comfort zone on the zip wire, to leadership skill during the problem solving and sensory trail task. All children (and staff) had a fabulous time and were a credit to the school at all times. I am sure they slept well Wednesday night after a full packed few nights away. Thank you to all the staff who attended the trip, allowing the children to be able to experience this wonderful opportunity.

FISCH

The start of a partnership with FISCH!

On Thursday morning, Rich Gercke, a parent within the St Joseph's community, led an assembly for the whole-school and introduced us to the charity FISCH - Future for Iringa Street Children. Rich and his wife, Lissie, are the Founders of FISCH and are working with us to work in partnership to pray, support and fundraise for the street children of Iringa.

Reception in space!

This week, we had a visit from Alessia Gualandris who is an astronomer! She talked to the children about all of the planets in our solar system. The children got to hold planets and learn how they all orbit the sun. We learned that the moon is not a planet because it does not orbit the sun!

Year 6 put things into perspective...

In Year 6 this week, our Art unit on perspective has seen the children attempting a cityscape using a one-point perspective, a horizon line and a vanishing point. The angles were tricky and it wasn't an easy task, but with perseverance everyone managed to produce a street lined with buildings which they were proud of.

Flying away in Year 1

This week, Year One have been learning about Samuel Cody and were lucky enough to visit the FAST museum in Farnborough, the town where Cody flew the first plane in 1908.

We were able to see a replica of the famous Cody Flyer and impressed the museum staff with our fantastic knowledge about Cody's life and work.

Afterwards, we were lucky enough to climb into the front seat of a plane and helicopter and finished off the day with a paper aeroplane race!

Eating with 2B

St Bernadette's Class led a wonderful worship this morning, exploring the theme of food and meals with the whole school. They shared with us some of the many references to preparing and sharing food in the Bible and encouraged us to think carefully about our own behaviour and gratitude during meal times.

They left us with the important reflection that we commemorate the Last Supper with Jesus every time we celebrate the Eucharist and that this is a precious gift we can share together. Such a beautiful assembly!

Witness to sharing meals

Sincere congratulations to this week's Witness Award winners. These children have championed our theme on the importance of sharing meals together, strengthening our relationships with others , which ultimately strengthens our relationship with God.
