Literacy
We have a robust and progressive framework for teaching of literacy across each stage in the school, empowering children to develop as confident readers and writers from early language acquisition to developing reading fluency, to interrogating themes, main ideas and finding information across a range of texts.
In our infant classes we develop our learners’ knowledge of sounds using the structured, progressive approach of Read Write Inc. We use ‘Fred Talk’ to break down words into their sounds, helping us to read confidently and with increasing fluency. Throughout Read Write Inc, children are introduced to new sounds and increasingly more advanced stories, as well as tricky ‘Red’ words. Children in P1-3 also use Read Write Inc to help to develop their knowledge of spelling patterns and rules!
Our Primary 4-7 classes focus on developing their confidence and competence as active readers. We learn and use the 6 Active Literacy skills to help us to make meaning from the novels we read. These strategies are:
Activating Prior Knowledge
Summarising
Visualising
Metalinguistics
Identifying the Main Idea
Drawing Inferences
We use a range of exciting new group novels to help to develop enthusiastic, engaged readers!
P4-7 use the Nessy Spelling programme to develop their knowledge of spelling patterns and rules. We are so lucky to have access to Nessy Online, allowing our learners to watch engaging animations and play exciting spelling games both in school and at home! We also benefit from using Nessy Fingers to develop our Touch Typing Skills.
Numeracy
As with Numeracy, we have a progressive knowledge and skills based maths and numeracy curriculum which blends a range of approaches from CPA (Concerete - Pictorial - Abstract) to the use of Big Maths. Learners develop numerical understanding through real-life contexts, developing understanding of how mathematical learning applies in the real world. This makes it relevant, engaging and purposeful!
At Allan’s we use Big Maths to provide a progressive, exciting and solid framework for learning and teaching of core numeracy. Our learners develop their skills in lessons which include elements of CLIC:
Counting
Learn Its
It’s Nothing New!
Caclulation
We use a range of other resources to supplement the learning and teaching of numeracy and wider maths, to ensure learners can transfer and apply their learning across different contexts
Weekly CLIC Assessments provide learners and teachers with evidence of progress and next steps for taught numeracy learning each week.
Weekly Learn It Challenges provide learners and teachers with evidence of progress and next steps with speed and accuracy of times tables knowledge.
