Unlike other middle schools, St. Ignatius Catholic School engages our students in an interdisciplinary study of Humanities. We are committed to helping students reach their highest potential by affording them an opportunity to make connections between the literature they read, the historical periods they explore, and the world around them. Through inquiry and project based learning, students will demonstrate mastery of their writing skills, their historical thinking skills, and their ability to use analytical thinking to form opinions and support those opinions with evidence. These explorations will empower students to take and active role in their learning as they become thoughtful, engaged citizens who exemplify Catholic social teachings.
ELA students in this course are introduced to literary analysis, continue to work toward proficiency of formal argumentative research, and work to demonstrate mastery of the five-paragraph expository essay. Students will continue to advance their proficiency and confidence as readers, writers and speakers through student selected literature and whole class novel instruction. By the end of this course students will demonstrate understanding of grade level grammar, usage, and mechanics.
Social studies students will work with primary and secondary sources to investigate historical questions by implementing reading strategies such as sourcing, contextualizing, corroborating, and close reading. Students will continue their study into the patterns and relationships between geography, culture, economy and politics.
