A daily agenda will be posted on Padlet listing what we will cover in class each day. Students can find the link to the Padlet on Google Classroom. Reminders and due dates will also be listed on the Padlet. Students are encouraged to record deadlines in their planners.
Classwork assignments posted on Google Classroom will also appear on the homework page. Students will be given sufficient time in class to complete most tasks; however, students will be responsible for completing work not finished in class for homework.
If students are absent, they should check the agenda, their Classroom Stream, and then email me with questions.
Google Classroom will be utilized to post the daily agenda, class assignments, as well as class materials and resources.
If you would like to know more about what your child is reading, commonsensemedia.org is a great resource. If you have any concerns about your child's book choice please feel free to discuss it with me so we can work together to find good-fit books for them. If you would like to donate to our class library, I am always trying to keep it updated with new books.
Students will be introduced to a variety of books and genres through my Book of the Month Independent Reading Program, & they will be given the freedom to choose books of interest. Students will be given a calendar &/or bookmark each month to help them stay on track so they can finish their book by the deadline, and I will be checking in to make sure they are progressing. Students will use their choice novels to work on annotating and various strategies to improve reading comprehension. There will be in-class responses and conferencing to check understanding. Nightly independent reading from their choice novel is highly recommended, but students who manage their time well may be able to stay on track with independent reading at school. Students are expected to have a choice novel at all times & may bring those from home or check them out from our extensive classroom library. Audiobooks are acceptable.
Through the Book of the Month program, students will be introduced to a variety of genres throughout the year, including realistic, dystopian, and historical fiction, novels in verse, and more. In addition, students will complete a short story unit in preparation for their literary analysis writing unit. We will also read at least one whole-class novel: Night by Elie Wiesel for our Holocaust unit, and, time permitting, The Giver by Lois Lowry. For more information on our specific units of study, please review the Literature syllabus.
Students will complete three main writing units:
Argument Unit of Study: Analyzing The Art of Argument (research)
The Literary Essay Unit of Study: Analyzing Craft and Theme
Narrative Nonfiction Unit of Study: Informative Writing
For each Unit of Study, we will work through the writing process starting with prewriting, followed by drafting, revising, editing, & finishing with published pieces. In between writing units, we will work on grammar skills, vocabulary, and creative writing. For grammar, we will utilize IXL and NoRedInk in class, and students may use these resources for extra practice at home. For additional information on our writing and grammar units, please review the syllabus.
