Aims of the English Department

The English Department is committed to:

developing among students a positive attitude towards learning English
creating an English learning environment for students
implementing programmes that effectively integrate knowledge and skills in the English learning experience of the students
developing in students an ever-improving capacity to use English.

We strive for providing excellent English language education to our students and we are in line with the aims of the English language curriculum in Hong Kong. We try to [1]

provide every student of English with further opportunities to extend their knowledge and experience of the cultures of other people, as well as opportunities for personal and intellectual development, further studies, pleasure and work in the English medium; and
enable every student to prepare for the changing socio-economic demands resulting from advances in information technology; these demands include the interpretation, use and production of materials for pleasure, study and work in the English medium.

We therefore help learners to develop an ever-improving capability to use English [1]

to think and communicate;
to acquire, develop and apply knowledge;
to respond and give expression to experience;

and within these contexts, to develop and apply an ever-increasing understanding of how language is organized, used and learned.
