Uniting First Responders for Safer, More Efficient Incident Response
The First Responder Committee is a statewide initiative dedicated to improving communications, coordination, and safety for emergency personnel responding to roadway incidents. This committee serves as a collaborative forum for law enforcement, fire, EMS, towing professionals, and CDOT to discuss challenges, share best practices, and develop strategies that enhance responder safety and traffic incident management (TIM) efficiency.
Through regular meetings, training initiatives, and policy recommendations, the First Responder Committee plays a critical role in shaping Colorado's TIM strategies and improving roadway safety.
Committee Goals & Priorities
Enhance Responder Safety - Promote best practices for safe positioning, scene management and personal protection.
Improve Incident Coordination - Strengthen interagency communication for faster, more effective incident clearance.
Reduce Clearance Times - Develop and implement strategies to minimize roadway disruptions and secondary crashes.
Standardize TIM Training - Ensure first responders statewide have access to consistent, high-quality TIM education.
Influence Policy & Best Practices - Provide recommendations on statewide TIM policies and responder safety initiatives.
Raise Public Awareness - Educate drivers on Move Over laws and safe driving behaviors near incident scenes.
Who Should Participate?
The First Responder Committee welcomes all agencies and professionals involved in roadway incident response, including:
Law Enforcement - State, county, and municipal officers
Fire Departments - Urban and rural fire agencies
EMS Providers - Ambulance and paramedic services
Towing & Recovery Operators - Heavy-duty and light-duty towing professionals
CDOT & Local Transportation Agencies - Traffic management and maintenance personnel
TIM Trainers & Safety Advocates - Experts in responder training and roadway safety.
First Responder Committee Meetings
Meetings are held quarterly and provide a platform for responders to:
Discuss recent incidents and lessons learned
