StarThrower Groups builds confidence.
Every day - we have coffee hour and our morning meeting to promote socialization and self-direction. Our day starts with members making decisions and choices based on their goals, interests, and needs that day. We talk about "Yays" and "Yuks" and listen and spend time focusing on mindfulness and mental health and goals at the start of every day.
Our message - neurodiversity IS normal.
We need to be aware of our mental and physical needs - and it is ok to make time for emotional health and regulation.
We all need to be confident enough to advocate for inclusion, support, and accommodations as needed, and be equally willing to help and respect others where they are, not based on where 'society' expects someone to be.
It's not about getting a job, it's about building a life.
We inspire careers by spending time wherever we go considering and evaluating the work environment. We ask questions such as:
Is this an environment I'd like to spend my day working in? Is it noisy/quiet chaotic/exciting/calm/boring? Are the employees friendly/kind to each other?
We get to know each person to establish what they like, but even more importantly: the things they don't like. When we can use the process of elimination to identify where our members might find a struggle or challenge, so we can help them prepare and ask for accommodations.
