This is the story of a family living during the time India became independent from Great Britain. India was split into two different countries and people were forced to move based on religion. The author tells the story of a father, two children and a grandmother that must flee to Pakistan and the brutalities they suffer. The story is written from the view point of the daughter who writes in her diary to her mother that passed away during the birth of the children. The story is not graphic, yet allows the reader to see what happened to many people during this time period.
